clutch question- Yanmar

I have had my first Yanmar for a few months now.
First post here and have a question.
I have a 1981 Yanmar 2310d.
The clutch does not seem quite right anymore.
When I push the clutch in, it seems like when I push the clutch all the way down, the tractor still wants to pull forward.
It is only when I take it out of gear that it seems to relax.
Once in neutral, it goes back into gear fine.

I have been reading a lot about clutch free play. I am just not sure how to check for this.
Should the clutch pedal free play be measured by how far I can push the clutch down with a finger until I meet resistance,
or should it be measured by how far I can push it with my foot before the tractor starts moving?
or is the free play measured by something else?

To the TBN forum. You have come to the right place to get answers.

Do you have an Operator or Work Shop Manual (WSM) for your tractor? It would show exactly how to adjust your clutch.

My manual says to measure the free play by how far you can push the pedal until resistance.

Ditto mddorange. You should have appx 5/8" freeplay. I do find it strange that once you are in neutral you have no trouble getting it back in gear. If the clutch were not completely releasing you should have a grinding when trying to put into gear.

This is very helpful.
I have a shop manual with parts list and breakdown, but see nothing on clutch adjustment. I see the turnbuckle picture with a rod that connects to the clutch pedal.
Two questions:
1. Not sure which way to adjust... Do I need to twist the turnbuckle making the distance longer... or twist it the other way to make the distance smaller?
2. How do I measure the 5/8 freeplay? Should the clutch pedal have 5/8 of no resistance where i could push it with my finger, or is the free play measured 5/8 until the tractor starts moving?

Yes. do whatever it takes to achieve that clearance. I prefer 1/2" or even less, with a gear transmission.

The distance you can move the pedal with your finger.
