Close call with welder.

Ihad a close call with my Miller Bobcat welder Tuesday. Tuesday evening I had a friend that wanted me to weld some pin brackets on his old D4D to add on an old rake. My welder is mounted on my service truck facing the drivers side. Along with the exhaust pipe for the welder. I had welded the tabs on and had the rake on by then. I noticed after I killed the weder that we missed a weld last month when we cut down the rake. I went to start the welder and it wouldnt start again. I was trying to start the motor I choked it a bit an it did nothing. I stepped up on my side box lid to get a look at the fuel gage thats mounted lower on the machine.


I raised my helmet and looked at the gage. I saw it was half full. As I was turning around the welder was still hot from welding and I gues the fuel from being choked had worked its way up the themufflerand it backfired. Knocked my glasses and my welding helmet into the grass. Not to mention it felt like I was slugged by a big person. I packed up and went to the doctors office to get my ringing ear examined. Ear is fine my face is a little bruised to. My head was about 4 feet from the exhaust opening when it backfired.

Those are the close calls you wonder who is watching over you. Glad you are OK. I am sure your muffler split (reverse ignition). Hope the ringging has stopped. That had to be at ear level.

I never knew that was possible! I've seen many backfires, but they were when cranking or while running. Glad to hear your ok.

Wow! I knew that a backfire could be LOUD! but I never knew they could actually cause such damage to a person (other than to your hearing of course). That's some backfire!

Glad it wasn't anything worse.
