I have a JD 5105 that lost hydraulics. Upon draining the fluid and checking the screen, I found it to be clogged with what appeared to be brown granular substance. My first thought was brake disk material, I had recently adjusted the brake pedal play because I had lost brakes. I have attached a photo.
Any advice on how to proceed, or what this material is?

Clean it an recheck after running awhile. Your right the brakes have to go someplace.

Removed the drawbar and reinstall it is a pain. Make sure all bolts is tight !

If you put a magnet on it that crud, will it stick? If its not magnetic, I would be afraid that it is parts of the brake lining.

It looks like some of it is very large flakes of rust. Have you ever had water contamination in your oil? When is the last time you changed the hydraulic oil? I don't think I have ever seen a reservoir rust before nor seen brake dust be anything more than a gray sludge on a screen. I don't have a clue as to where that came from if it is indeed rust particles.

I don't beleive it is rust, it seems to be non metallic. The hydraulic oil was changed 2 years ago, less than 100 hours since then. I did clean the screen, pour the fluid back in through a screen, and things seem to work fine. I am concerned that it may be brake lining, although I still have some brakes, not great though.
If the brake disks need to be replaced in the future I don't think I can pull it off with my limited tools and skill level, I looked at the technical manual and it seems somewhat involved.
I will use it for a bush hog job or two and then drain and inspect the screen again. Not sure what else to do at this point. Any advice most appreciated.

Looks like a seal kit gone bad in a hydraulic cylinder possibly.

I'm afraid that the disintegrated brake lining theory is the most likely. IMHO.
