2008 Kubota 7040
Need a little input from you guys. We were using our MF 4225 yesterday on the farm. The tractor had been started and used a few times. Upon trying to restart, all we get is a single click coming from "around" starter and then nothing. I cannot quite place if the click is coming from the starter itself, or something else. Bad starter? Tractor only has 700 hrs so I thought the starter would be a little premature to be worn out? Any ideas....

Seem fine. Have juice to all the lights and the dummy lights on the dash all come on. Have not put the battery tester on it yet...had a lot of work to do yesterday so we just push started the Massey. I figured if it was the battery then after running the tractor for several hours it would fire back up from charging a little, but it did no good.

Have you tried the connections on the started solenoid? I have known this problem with the main brass connection bolt not being tight or making poor contact due to corrosion.

Sounds like the battery to me. I can't tell you the number of times the lights have worked and the battery was in need of a charge. The clicking is probably the starter sellinoid sp. it gets enough juice to make contact but not enough to engage the starter.

Maybe try a gentle tap or two on the starter. :D

Tried that but did no good. I will check the battery connections and see if they are loose or dirty. Will let you know the outcome. Thx.

Did you try and jump it? Check connections at the battery and GROUND. Bypass the key and wires and try to jump the solenoid on the starter with a screwdriver. Still no, rotate the engine a few degrees and try. Still no, replace the starter solenold. Still no, replace starter!! Still no, replace tractor. :D :D

Just bought a new Kubota M7040, so i actually got the replacement before the Massey broke!! :)

Actually, I really like the Massey so it will be repaired and continued to be used.

Check the safety switches if jumping the battery doesn't work after cleaning the connections. My 4243 has a switch on the PTO lever as well as the neutral start switch. When the PTO lever is the least bit forward it will act like that on mine. If you try to jump the starter with a screwdriver, please be careful. We don't want to read about you on the safety page.;)

Check the battery if you haven't tested it yet. I have a MF1010. Checked all kinds of connections. Finally yanked the battery out and took it to Advance Auto and let them pull it down a few times. It was putting out something around 9-10 volts. Would start the tractor on a warm day, but barely. I was getting the click sound too. New battery, no issues.
