We live along side a river. The river bank has a lot of unbrush that I would like to clean up so we could walk through the woods.

What would be an effective tool? I've look at the estate trimmers but they only have the trimmer wires - I am suspecting I would need a blade to cut some of the bush.

Thanks again all.

Garth,

There have been a few threads lately on cutting brush.

How long and wide of a trail are you planing?

I have used a Stihl FS80 or FS85 to cut saplings with brush blades.

We are trying to keep roughly a mile of wooded property boundries clear so we bought a DR Brushcutter. The DR will work you to death if you let it but it does more, faster, and easier then a hand held machine. Each has its good and bad points. Just depends on your needs, pocket book, and property.

You can buy circular blades with a chain saw edge for string trimmers. They are available in several sizes up to at least 14". I have a 14" on a DR wheeled trimmer, works but a b**** to handle, at least for me with my bad knees.

is this not an area you can get into with a tractor and brush hog?

that would seem to be the simplest and quickest.....

Unbrush? I need some of that to mix with my brush so the two will cancel out!

Seriously, look for an old Gravely two-wheeled tractor with the 30" bushhog, or one of the DR brush mowers. Great for rough areas where it's difficult to fit a regular tractor/SCUT.

I use a Stihl FS250 with a blade attached. It is a cutting machine! Very powerful and cuts anything.

This is a pretty labor intensive undertaking. I went alongside our creek, and where I wanted walking trails first with loppers and a machete. I cut vines and briars as high up as I could reach. Then when all of that was down, went back with my riding mower (an old Snapper), and cut my paths. Then it's just a matter of keeping it mowed/trimmed, and widening a little each time till you get what you like.

GarthH:

I have had no complaints brushing my hiking/snowshoeing trails on my property with my Stihl FS 130 brushcutter. I have the chisel tooth circular saw blade, bicycle handle, and full harness. This setup is well balanced and lightweight enough to walk through your paths without too much difficulty. I also have the auto-cut mowing head.

For what it's worth- Jay
