We have an 83' JD 410 TLB, Used for just a little bit and discovered the hydraulic fluid was real low, filled up. Tractor works just fine in forward/reverse in LOW range but will not move very good in HI range. 1st gear HI and it seems like its slipping, it will move but we stopped trying out of fear to cause any damage, would not even think about trying it in 2nd HI etc.

Just spent the day looking over all the different boards and issues and it appears our problem is somewhat common with this model backhoe. Decided before I do any more work on it, would order the Service, Parts, and Operators manuals set. Before I divulge deeply in to this..all the issues people have with the wet disc reverser etc. I gotta ask...is there any other model tractor where the transmission can be swapped out of in a "worst case scenario"??

For example, say you owned a Ford 5000 with hydrostatic trans and the hydrostatic has failed and you get tired of playing with it, decide it just might be easier to go to standard shift trans and find one to swap out with. That works with the Ford BUT with the JD 410 they only list one trans that came in the tractor, basically stayed the same from 71' to 83', will an older model JD backhoe trans fit on this as a swap out if a person cannot get the issues resolved? the parts support is somewhat lacking as JD no longer has the drum available for the reverser...did the older model backhoes have the same reverser or? Have to wait for the manuals to come in and Ill give my best but I'm kinda dreading it. Any advice? Ill post to the same subject as I find things out with the manuals, it may take a few days time between posting etc. Thanks for any input/advice.

Hydro's really don't react well to low fluid, no matter who made them. If the swash plate in the pump is starved for oil it galls and you loose motion. No easy fix either. It has to be split and the worn parts replaced.

5030: Thanks for the input, the JD 410 is actually kind of half and half standard trans. Its gear shift but the "shuttle" shift is hydraulically activated and normally a user does not have to use the foot clutch to go forward/revers and to change gears you put the shuttle shifter in the neutral position and still do not have to use the foot clutch. Its a weird setup. The actual dry foot clutch seems to work ok on it.

JD hyd reverser has no swash plate to fail. I suggest you check hyd reverser operating pressure. It's possible trans disconnect clutch is slipping instead of reverser clutches. On subject of donor reverser it appears from viewing JD 410 parts catalog that there is a serial break @ 192066 on application of input shaft of reverser assembly
