I left the ignition switch on accidentally for several hours and ran the battery down and after charging the battery the engine will not start. The current to everything drops almost to nothing when I turn the key to start and nothing happens. Then with the key left in the run position there is a faint clicking/buzzing noise under the hood. I have checked and rechecked all connections that I could find anything. Any ideas about the source of the problem would be appreciated. I am thinking a relay gone bad but that is a guess. I see what looks like several relays under the hood but I do not know which is which. There is no dealer close to me any longer so I am trying to get through this myself and I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

If you have a volt meter have somebody hold the terminals on the battery and see what the voltage drops to when you try to start. I suspect that the battery is holding a float charge, but goes belly up when under load. The clicking buzzing also indicates low voltage in some cases.

Thanks for the reply. I tried jumper cables first then I removed and cleaned both terminals-same thing. Meter shows anywhere from 4 to 6 volts when key is in run position. I removed both cables from the battery and used the jumpers again to hook to those cables without the old battery in the equation and still had the same problem. I reckon the next step is put in a new battery so that the jumpers are out of the equation even though they are in good condition and checked OK.

Sounds like your battery is completely dead.

Recommend you check your battery water levels, charge it up overnight using a good automatic charger, and then try again the next day. If it doesn't hold a charge, go get a new battery. Not worth messing with if it won't hold a charge.

Thanks for the info, Guys! I went to Advance got a new battery and problem solved. What threw me off was the failure of the jumper cables. I have used them numbers of times before without any problem and this time I checked them for continuity with the ohm meter. I made sure I had good connections on both ends so that was not the problem, but I will buy another set. I have been around for a long time and this is not the first time that 12V has baffled me and cost me time!

I haven't had good luck jump starting vehicles with even new heavy duty cables if the vehicle being jumped has a faulty battery. True story the original battery in my tractor failed kind of similar to yours. You could turn the key on go through preheat and when you turned to start all dash lights would go out. Turn the key off and back on and repeat as many times as your wished. Connect a battery charger, and turn it on and then immediately back off and disconnect the charger and it would start for a week. Even would pass testing at the battery dealer. One day it failed and I immediately took the battery out and took it to the dealer and it failed.

Glad you got it figured out! Now you can put a good trickle charger on it and keep it for a few years! That is, if you don't leave the key on again. :) Think we've all been there, done that.
