Hi all,

I have a 2006 CK30 gear that wont start. I get all the good lights on the dash, & wait for the glow plugs to go out, turn the key and I get a single click with no turnover.

I replaced the ignition switch (thinking it was that since I had done the WD-40 "fix" a couple of times and it was still occasionally flaky). I also replaced the battery which tested bad.

I read on this board about putting a screwdriver across the solenoid and trying to start. That does make the start motor turnover with the normal whine (which it doesn't without the screwdriver) but it doesnt fire. It did make some nice sparks and pits in the screwdriver though :)

Does it sound like the solenoid?

Was the key on when you jumped the solenoid with the screwdriver? If not then the fuel solenoid would still be off and no diesel going to engine, hence why no start. It does sound like the starter solenoid to me since it won't turn the motor with the key even with a good battery. I don't believe there is any other connections between the starter switch and starter solenoid but could be wrong.

The first culprit I suspected was a resistive ground connection (very
common) from the battery. Since you shorted the starter, and it spun,
that can be ruled out.

The only iinterlock safety switch on the HST CKs is a clutch switch. That
could be the problem. I do not know, but the Gear CKs may have a neutral
safety switch also. Check those next.

CK gears will start with the tractor in gear, and with the PTO engaged, as long as the clutch is pressed in when you turn the key (The clutch must always be depressed during starting).

As I recall, you do have to be in the seat. When I tried to start mine from the ground by pushing in the clutch with my hand and turning the key, it wouldn't hit a lick. But I've never really looked for a seat switch or tried this more than once.

I'd study the ignition/starter/fuel pump circuit for a clue as to where to start looking. Sounds like both the fuel and starter aren't getting power.

Also, I think there have been some users who had a connector under the tractor come loose that caused similar behavior too.

My ignition switch is also chronic. The first time mine acted up, I disconnected the battery and sprayed in some brake cleaner. Waited on it to dry and then put in some silicon lub. Lasted about 3 months. Started misbehaving again yesterday. Sure seems to be picky given that my tractor is never in the rain. So, today I cleaned it again with brake cleaner; only this time I used fluid film instead of silicon. It's working fine again. We'll see if the fluid film lasts longer than the silicon. I like the way it sticks around though, and smells good enough to eat too :D.

similar answer to Gittyup

remove battery terminal connections, clean the battery posts and add a little grease to the posts prior to tightening the battery connections back down.

try then to start the tractor

mine does this from time to time, same thing gaugle cluster works just get a single click when you turn the key. From older posts years ago members encountering the same issue found it to be moisture on the terminals not providing a "good enough" ground to crank the engine but enough for electricals.

but as others said, the gear model for start must have all gear lever settings in Neutral and the clutch pressed in.

I'm at 350hrs weekend warrior hours on the clock - purchased Mar 2005

Make sure you also follow the ground wire to the passenger frame rail, remove it and clean both the cable and frame.

Rick, I notice that your bailout is less. It looks like business has been very good for you. What a difference with the Bobcat specials being over.:D

As Rick W. advised, the main ground from the battery is connected to the right frame rail about 6 inches from the front. When I did my first service at 50 hours, I disconnected the cable, cleaned the frame area at the mounting hole and the cable terminal. I coated both with copper anti-seize and haven't had a problem in 4 years.
As Gittyup mentioned, I remember other posts where those connections under the floorboards became corroded or lose and caused a multitude of problems for guys. Maybe another thing to check and while you have them apart and use a little silicone/dielectric grease before reconnecting.

Rick,You are doing well because people are canceling their lawn maintenance services, buying machines and doing it them selves, the Lawn maintenance guys are starving. At least that is the situation here in CT. Stock up on snow throwers!!

This has been a good year...

That is great news, Rick.

One thing that might be helping is that the weaker dealers (customer
service, pricing, etc) may be closing....
