About two weeks ago, I noticed that the steering was getting tough on my one year old ck20. Checked the fluid and hit all the grease fittings but still no better. If I raise or lower the FEL the steering works fine like it's boosting the fluid flow. This problem is the worst when working in tight spaces at about 2000 rpm. Any thoughts before I haul it back to the dealer?

I'm not really sure I understand exactly what tough means? Does the wheel get hard to turn? Are you turning it all the way to the stops either way and getting a squeal? That would be usual, the squeal, but not difficult turning at that RPM.

Are you having any difficulties with any other hydraulics such as the 3pt hitch or the HST?

Now tight turning often will cause you to turn the wheel all the way to the stops, and this should not be maintained at full turn for a long period, but it should make it difficult to turn, but will make a different noise.

You've had it long enough to notice the difference I would suppose, so if you think there is a problem, the first thing to do is call the dealer. If there is a problem, you need them to repair it anyway.

Unless you have someting bent or broken, I can't think of any reason you should have difficult steering if everything else is working right, and you say it seems to operate properly if you raise or lower the loader, which is a little confusing. Does it turn okay in open territory? That model doesn't have a separate pump for the steering, so it should work as well as everything else.

Let us know what's happening. and if you can, describe exactly what you're getting, when, and what you're doing in ever instance that you have a problem.

There have been a few bent tie rods on the CK25/30's due to running stuff over. I don't know if the 20 has the same rod but it would be worth a peek under the front axle.

I've been noticing something similar. Under certain conditions, the steering seems to lock up hard. Backing the machine a bit seems to clear it. Not hard/easy - more like locked/unlocked. I assumed that this had to do with hydraulic design. Is it a sign of damage or defect?

John, yes I mean it is hard to steer. 3pt and fel work fine, it's just the steering. I am not cutting all the way to stops, it's hard to turn the wheel even to the smallest degree. Hope that clears up some of your questions. I will take it the dealer and let him take a look. Might be a good time to get that BH I have been wanting anyway!

Had time to take my CK20 HST to the dealer this week to get the steering problem checked out. Picked it up this morning and all is working great. Asked what caused the problem and my dealer said that one of the valves that supplies the steering unit was stuck.

Hmmmmm. Interesting.
Guess that makes sense. I need to look at the schematics to see that though.

Glad you're back in business!
