Three-on-the-tree was nice when new.
Old when we got them,they seem to get stuck on the 1-2 upshift if not super careful!
Then lift the hood and move both levers to neutral.
Hopefully you were on level ground because the E-brake never worked,and you had to get tension off the driveline to move the levers under the hood.
Sometimes had to find a rock to place under a tire,then push in the clutch to roll back to relieve the tension.
I know you guys remember this stuff-good times indeed!

One of the first vehicles I drove was a 3 on the tree. A donated C30 camp truck we used to haul pool equipment between camps. I taught swimming at age 15 to scouts at summer camp. good times

I only had a few vehicles with a column mounted 3 speed shifter and I quickly converted those to floor shifters.

I do miss a good 4 or 5 speed manual truck at times. I learned how to drive on an old c20 with a 3 on the tree on a farm. Dang thing would always jam up shifting into 3rd.

My Jeep is not keen on downshifting to first. I understand.

Daily driver in HS. 1987 ford ranger 5 on the floor.

Joined the Green Machine and really learned to drive a stick. Manual Duece and a Half with transfer case. High and Lo range on the transfer came in handy hauling that POS anywhere.

Years ago My FAV ride was a BMW M3 I owned in Germany 3.2l 6 cylinder with a 6 speed manual. I have only been faster on one other vehicle on land, my Blackbird.

When I was stationed on Okinawa, our shop got a new shop truck from the motor pool. It was a little diesel pickup truck with a 5 speed on the tree. That took some getting used to. I was the only one that could drive it (after I got the hang of it) without skipping gears and stalling the truck. So it got to be "my truck" after a while. Only one I've ever seen with 5 on the tree. I don't remember for sure, but I think it was an Isuzu?

My mom taught me how to un-stick our 70 Nova 3 on the tree when it would do that. She showed me so that she could stay in the car with one foot on the brake and push the clutch in with the other. I'd hop out, pop the hood, flick the linkage and hop back in. Good times!

Forgot the part where you hop out, wave at the cars stuck behind you, fix it, then wave at them again when you get back in.

Never saw a 5 in the tree, but the old Saabs had 4 in the tree, my mother had one in the early 70s. Wasn't really designed for people with large hands, the wiper switch was also a stalk on the RH side of the column and was easy to bump while shifting. Taught my sisters how to drive stick on it.
Car also had free wheeling, which is difficult to describe unless you've driven one with it.
