City Drivers - at night

As I get older I find that my night vision is failing me. :( Therefore I do drive slower on narrow roads, although not as bad as what the OP describes. I've also learned the value of not overdriving my headlights and no matter how good they are, no light shows what's around a curve.

They've come a long way in headlight technology in the past 10 years.

We had issues with my wifes older jeep and the stock headlights. She absolutely hated driving it at night do to the poor visibility.

She has no issues with seeing at night with her 2020 Buick.

Low beams on the Buick beat the jeep with the high beams on. High beams are like stadium lighting. You can see forever with that thing.

I hate when people complain about the people and farms that have been on site forever.
I have seen changes forced by the new people, they move out to the "country" and try to make into their old urban neighborhood!

Last house, we had lots of fireflies etc. until the neighbor had some company spray the whole lawn, killed all our insects, good and bad.
We asked them why, the bugs scared them, not used to them in the city............

That's one of the joys of living away from the city. Something which I really miss hearing is whip-poor-wills. We used to hear them all of the time in summer, when I was growing up; yet I very rarely hear them now.

I enjoy watching them flit around the fields at night while I'm walking the dog after dark.

Learned to drive on a Model A with 32 cp headlights and the reflectors were in need of re-silvering so the lights are more so others can see you opposed to you seeing out ahead... the small dash light was just enough for the panel. The lights did brighten up a bit at highway speed from the extra generator electricity.

I was mentioning this to one of my friends and he said you kids don't have a clue???

He learned to drive on a Model T with old oil and acetylene lamps... kind of a yellowish glow with really no view of the road and having to keep the wicks trimmed for oil... he really hated to drive on a no moon night.

I was driving a late model Land Rover and the visibility provided from the headlights was astonishing...

One thing drivers in the olden days didn't have to account for is someone with high beams on your tail... I'm always flipping the rearview mirror at night.

When I think of low-light driving, I think of my uncle. Riding dispatch in WWII with black-out lights on his MC, more than once he came to a couple of hours later. Firefly's we like probably are brighter than those black-out lights - he got knocked out cold riding into bomb craters that he never saw in time.

Yep... I drive the speed limit and always passed on country roads...

My guess is locals in a hurry.

At my brother's a few weeks back a new expensive subdivision where homes start at 1.5m was built.

He heard sirens and went to investigate.

Brand new Lexus SUV on its side taking out 80' of brothers new deer fence.

Driver said road to narrow and right wheel went off pavement into culvert... she jerked wheel to left and rolled car... single vehicle event in clear dry weather.

She said road is unsafe because of culverts.

Road is old county road and subdivision farm land annexed by city.

Standard answer for everything these days, but not necessarily correct. One of my coworkers used to swear by his dash mounted GPS, watching it constantly. He could never understand how people could drive so fast on roads like the OP describes... he was always watching his GPS. In the case the OP describes it sounds like she was driving too fast, and didn't know what to do when her tires left the pavement.

I seldom drive at night. I make an honest effort to be home PRIOR to sunset. I know my night vision has deteriorated and night is when all the "animals" come out to play.

You don't like how fast I'm driving out on the country roads - for Christ's sake, pass me. Don't tailgate me - you might not like what I'll do.

To be honest there are probably as many or more locals that drive like the city drivers you all are describing. House building has been pretty stagnant around here lately and the “city” around here is no more than 20,000 people.
