Chris,
Thanks but I'm not really looking to hire out to do that kind of work anyway.

W (MR. Shubert?),
Thanks for your comments. I'll try to find something used, working, and maintainable either way I go, tractor mount/PTO or stand alone. My tractor is rated for 39 HP at 540 RPM on the PTO output but the engine is approaching relativistic speeds or so it sounds to run at PTO speed. I virtually never run at PTO speed and when I do it is for specific short periods like eating a particularly tough tree with the brush hog.

Has anyone had any experience with the DR PTO Chipper that countryhomeproducts sells? They don't have it on their website but I understand it is a special order, and handles up to 4 1/2" trees. Goes for about $2000 plus shipping.

Thanks.

I am also interested in any information on the DR. I am wrestling with the choice of stand alone, or a PTO driven model.

I'm also looking for an affordable PTO chipper. I received this reply from Country Home (note 30 day free trial):

Thank you very much for your recent message. We appreciate your interest in our products.

We do offer a P.T.O. CHIPPER/SHREDDER. It is available as a special order item (it's not featured in our literature or on our website). The list price for the P.T.O. CHIPPER/SHREDDER (Item #139637) is $2,295.00.
However, if you order now you can enjoy our off-season price of $1,999.00. Depending on which delivery option you choose, shipping to the contiguous 48 United States is an additional $109.00 to $218.00.

The P.T.O. CHIPPER/SHREDDER requires a minimum tractor power of 16 HP (50 HP maximum). The recommended P.T.O. speed is 540 RPM. The P.T.O. CHIPPER/SHREDDER mounts on a Category 1, 3-point tractor hitch. The unit is capable of chipping limbs up to 4 1/2" thick and shredding branches up to 1 1/2" thick. The P.T.O. CHIPPER/SHREDDER features 48 reversible shredder hammers and two chrome steel chipping knives, which are 5 1/4" long.

The machine housing is constructed of 7-gauge steel. The chipper hopper is made of 14-gauge steel (10-gauge steel for the chipper chamber). The top of the chipper opening is 8" x 11" (the opening for the shredder hopper is approximately 18 1/2" x 9 1/2"). Crated dimensions of the unit are 53" L x 35" W x 48" H (shipping weight: 460 lbs.).

The unit comes with a 30-Day Trial period. This means that you may return the P.T.O. CHIPPER/SHREDDER within 30 days after first using it if you're not completely satisfied. We will provide you with a refund of the product's purchase price and your original shipping fee, but because it's a special order item you would be responsible for the return shipping fee.

To place an order, please call TOLL-FREE 1-800-854-2588 and ask to speak with a Lead Customer Service Representative. Indicate to our Representative that you wish to order Item #139637. The P.T.O. I also have been looking into 3PH chippers. Tractorman gave me some good prices on the big three (Patu, Danuser, Valby) and also mentioned that there is an outfit out of Vermont which makes 3PH chippers which many people are happy with. Maybe DR is the place he was thinking of.

It looks like this is a 3PH version of the 18HP gas chipper/shredder which you can see on DR's web page. A couple of things I would check out before taking the plunge:

Knife and hammer availability and replacement costs. I am currently using a Troy chipper which I am looking to replace with something bigger. When I went looking for replacements I found Troy had gone into bankruptcy and parts were unavailable from them.

"Reversible hammers"...are these two way or four way reversible? A set of 48 replacement hammers is going to be a hunk of change, so 4-way would be nice.

I really like the Danuser 18P but have issues with the design of the 18P and some other chippers like the DR one. The chipping intake chute is high and angled way up. I read all these comments about "chips 4 inch trees, branches leaves, and all" and wonder how I'm going to lift a 4 inch tree and feed it in from that angle. Maybe an occasional tree but feeding brush at that angle all day is going to be slow and exhausting. The chipper chute location has me leaning towards the Patu DC40 which has a better intake location.

Do any of you have a Bushhog C/S or the Goshen C/S ? They look like the same machine. There are also a lot of simalarities with the Bearcat/Woods C/S. I wondered if Bearcat made the Bushhog unit. One difference is that the Bushhog shredder shoot has a metal hood over it with a rubber flap that guards the opening. How does the shredder shoot work? Does the material drop in easily? Does any of the material fly back out? The bearcat and bushhog machines appear to be very close. I was wondering if I could adapt the hood and Flap from a Bushhog to my bearcat and do away with the bruch style guards.

WSchubert,

Maybe yours is the same unit that EFC is selling for $1600 now?
See <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.efcconstruction.com/BackhoeandImplements.htm> EFC Construction </A>.
"$1600.00- This is a solid unit. Simple design uses common parts. 24" fly wheel allows even small tractors to power this unit. Self feeding, chips up to 6" material. Price includes top link for three point. "

Looks remarkably like the <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.boltonpowerequip.com/woodchippers.html>Bolton Power Equipment</A> China import chippers. But EFC has a much better price.

That should have been Goossen Industries out of Beatrice NE. There chipper/shredder is painted blue but otherwise looks identical to Bushhogs chipper/shredder. I think bushhog no longer sells that C/S. I wonder if gossen made it and something happened. Anyone know?

I have a 10hp DR chipper, I bought it used for $500. It still looks new and the owners manual is dated 1999, so it can't be too old. It works good, I have been chipping oak limbs that are well seasoned. It is stated to chip up to 3.5 inch limbs. The machine is loud and requires hearing protection. It has a trailer tounge made to tow behind a riding mower. Works great! The machine sells for around $1200 new off the DR web site. (country home products) Larry

I've also been using a TroyBilt chipper (10 HP). TroyBilt went belly up around the time my chipper did last year.

I had a chat with my local dealer right after he got back from training and he told me that the various groups of Troybilt have all been sold to different companies. He believes that most of the products are being continued under Troybilt branding and that he has a solid line of parts.

After almost 10 years of pounding myself on this chipper I managed to rationalize myself into a used Kubota L48 with FEL and backhoe plus a new Salsco 826 chipper (surely I should win a prize for that feat...). I just used the chipper for the first time this weekend and it is absolutely awesome. It has a reversible hydraulic feed and you just load and turn around to get the next log. It has a 6"x12" infeed so you don't have to trim branches on most pieces.

I just recently purchased a Bear Cat 70554 5" PTO Chipper/Shredder for use with my Kubota B2410. Used for approximately 8 hours this past weekend and am very satisfied with the Bear Cat performance. Kubota "purred like a kitten" while chipping. Tractor did lug down on 5" limbs but handled all others just fine. The 70554 is self feeding once you insert limb to start. Unit seems quite durable, with a 140 lb. wheel with 4-knives and 36-shredding knives. Just so happens that the Bear Cat is "orange in color," an added benefit!

Can you share how much the Salsco set you back?

$6500 at Chappel's in Milford.
RN Johnson in Walpole also carries them, but they were a LOT higher. Salsco just came out with a 4" version this year.
