How high of traffic volume on subdivision streets with tar and chip

Each area may have varying rules secondary roads chip and double seal, primary roads mostly pavement but not always. CBR values play a role in how roads are constructed but traffic count rarely used. It varies region to region. Hopefully this answers your question

The OP has obviously been studying what he wants and appears to have made an informed decision

1968 - Palmer, AK. DOH contractor lays down tar & chip on one half of the state highway going thru Palmer. About five miles worth. Roller is done - that half is still blocked off. Something happened - here comes the AK State police - he looks like a blinking Christmas tree. He swerves out onto the new tar & chip section to avoid the contractors equipment.

The tar & chip coat rolls up on his cruiser tires - just like a jelly roll. He gets about 80 feet and is brought to a quick stop. Something with the materials used or the process is WRONG. We were in the strip mall parking lot and saw the whole thing. At first everybody kept it contained - then one person began laughing - uncontrollably. That's all it took. An entire crowd burst out laughing. The highway patrolman got out of his cruiser and the crap stuck to the bottom of his boots also. I can hardly contain myself, right now, as I remember this scene.

It even made the evening news in Anchorage. Bottom line - the entire job had to be scraped up and new laid down.
I'm interested in getting our concrete driveway resurfaced with chip seal. There's a company that's been out dropping flyers, so somebody around here evidently can do the job.

What I've read about chip seal is it has to go down over a driveway that's in decent shape and I don't know if mine counts. Our driveway isn't a crumbling mess or anything but it does have some big cracks:

Also, both part of the driveway and part of the garage slab have sunken slightly and I was hoping at some point to do the concrete injection thing underneath to raise them back up so my garage door doesn't leave a gap when it's closed:

Will chip seal make this repair harder/impossible later on?

It looks like your driveway is concrete. Can they chipseal over concrete? I wouldn't think so, but maybe I'm wrong.

Never tried it do not think it would work very well

I had my 600 ft (11-12' wide) done with 2 coats of hot tar and fine gravel, rolled. Cost $5500. Had previously gotten a quote for 2" asphalt, rolled, and it was $18,000+.

Once the hot tar and gravel got driven on, it's like asphalt.

Another option you may have is to see if anybody close by is repaving their parking lots. I got 7 loads of ground up asphalt for a base, and if I had rolled it, it would have been as good as having it paved. My bad.

The county I live in, Island County, WA, needed to save some money and went to chip seal for a lot lower usage roads. They apply tar, spread the rock chips, vacuum up the loose rock chips after a certain period of time, then after some more time passes they apply another coat of tar. The tar is thin, like oil. Anyway, I was surprised to see that these chip sealed roads are holding up so well. And the surface is pretty smooth.

I would not pave or chip seal, or put anything over that concrete. It will not last, and you will be wasting your money. If it was mine, I would seal all the cracks with a concrete caulk that will seal out the water and allow movement without losing it's seal. Before sealing it, I would clean out the cracks really good. Probably use a pressure washer or a wire wheel on a grinder. or both.

Chip sealing broken concrete isn't going to do much for you, as the concrete is not stable.

You can do foam injection to lift the slab back into alignment at the garage, but I would be tempted to take it out, and do a new pour out 3-5', perhaps to one of your existing cracks.

After that is done, I would pressure wash the cracks clean and then get a crack following diamond blade and clean out the cracks. I would then patch the cracks with an epoxy based mortar. If you end up with some junctions that are a little offset in height, you can run over the high points with a diamond cup grinder to level things off. Don't try for thin concrete or mortar tapers, as they will dry and flex differently than the underlying concrete.

All the best,

Peter

I just had 42 ton of asphalt millings put in the existing gravel driveway and turn around. Contractor did a nice job too.
