So my chimney crown needs repair.

I'm on a tight budget.

And it's high.

We will need the house reroofed in a few years. And a proper repair including replacing the cracked tile could be done then by proper roofers.

It's about 24 foot down and I'm apprehensive of my ability to mortar that far up in the wind.
So I was thinking for a quick easy patch I'd put some hardware cloth down then spray a crown patch using some "Great Stuff" foam insulation to seal it up and prevent water and squirrels entering.

What say the TBN expertise?

Just your pictures give me the willys. :giggle: I don’t do heights anymore. Too old too and don’t bounce like I used to.
Good luck.

Get get yourself some ladder hooks and put a ladder on the roof. This makes approaching the chimney a lot easier. Renting a man lift isn’t very pricy either compared to a pro mason. Many have an electrical outlet in the cage.
Quickest cheapest: Diamond saw the broken tile so top is level. Cover the bricks with mortar. Put a chimney cap on the cut end of the tile and call it done.
You need enough tile above the bricks to add mortar covering (and chimney cap if added). It’s hard to see how low tile needs to be cut. You might have to remove one coarse of brick to keep tile end above mortar.

So no comments on spray foam for a temp patch?
/edit - and the only thing that goes up the chimney is exhaust from a 10 yr old 30 gallon propane fired hot water heater in the basement 30 foot down, so it doesn't get HOT.

Get a coil of stainless chimney liner and be done with it.
When my parent's chimney was damaged by a chimney fire, their insurance company paid to reline it with stainless.

I wouldn’t bother with the foam. It’s probably a pain to clean out for when it’s done proper.
I’d just mix up some mortar and carry up as much as I felt comfortable in a bucket. Or pull bucket up on rope once your at top. Or man lift.

Did a company cut the tree down? Or your buddy? Why I ask is, if a company cut the tree, maybe you can get them to pay someone to do it for you. Just a thought, Jon
