Young lady's Chernobyl Story

You folks might enjoy, if that is the correct word, this fascinating journey through the area surrounding Chernobyl.. by a young Russian lady. I wish my Russian were half as good as her English. She's a biker, and takes rides through that area on her Kawasaki.

Please yank this if moderators feel it's too far off-topic. I think most people will find it interesting, how this young lady perceives things.. she was 7 years old when the incident took place.. and she has had a while to come to some sort of grips with it.

I was actually over there for work back in 1997, and in the town of Slavutych, which was built to house the plant workers, and all the other residents of Pripyat, after the '86 accident. I wouldn't say the visit was fun, but it certainly made me appreciate certain things more.

So sad , especially the kindergarten pictures. I wish there was a way to e-mail her to thank her for this. Yes, it does make you realize how lucky we are. Thanks for posting this. It is something i wont soon forget. Hopefully it will be left up for others to read.

I guess we all heard of the disaster at Chernobyl on the news years ago, but the sheer size of the affected area was something I never realized. Living here, I just thought it was a small town over there in the middle of nowhere. That picture story sure puts it in true perspective...........We really have it made here...............Tom

Here's a pic of the young lady who wrote the piece, with her dad, the nuclear physicist. Don't they just look like normal, nice, people? It's sad that we got side-tracked into this whole "Russians are evil" thing. I'd like to email her also.. maybe I'll try regular snail mail..

Are we doing it all over again, for the sake of war profiteering????? )</font>

Sorry, I stepped over the line into politics.. shouldn't have gone there. Let's just leave it at, this is a neat young lady who told us something about the horror show of Chernobyl. I think she did a great thing, by showing us something we (or at least I) had never known or seen up close. She goes into my book as a very cool lady.

Glad you folks enjoyed this! Even my 85-year-old mother, who isn't comfortable with computers, said she couldn't remember ever being that fascinated by something.. she followed it right to the end. She said it was like getting to know the people over there, instead of merely visiting and seeing tourist traps.

Thanks for letting this one slide, moderators!

I apoligize also, this is not supposed to be a political forum and i'm glad for that. Just before i saw this thread i typed in "war profiteering" in google search engine, and the stuff it came up with just boiled my blood.

Like everyone else has said, that was a fascinating web page. I too would like to e-mail her.

As for typing in war profiteering in Google and getting your blood boiling: 15 years ago if we wanted information we went to the library or pulled out the encyclopedia. Now anybody with a computer can put what ever they want on a webpage and we take it for the gospel truth. Don't believe everything you read on the net. Everyday on this website I read at least 2 or 3 comments from someone who thinks they have all the answers and typically they are 180 degrees from being correct.

Trev , if you snail mail her see if you can get her e-mail addy. Are there other pics or info on this that you might have? Could you put up where you got this info? I am fascinated by it and want to read more about it.

Thanks
Dur

Hi Dur,

The only other thing I'm aware of is a slightly different version of the same story.. differing in that she apparently took more pictures this year and *slightly* revised the page and stuck the new version at the URL I posted initially.

The older version, which again is almost identical with the exception of a few different pics and commentary which is worded just a wee bit different, is at:

Older Site

I hope you aren't disappointed that much of it is identical...

Yes, if I snail mail her, I'll certainly ask for an email addy.. and for permission to share it.

Best,
Bob

Thanks Bob , I did some searching and found this site about the children. Please read ALL the pages about them. It is a real heartbreaker. Also the amount of radiation was 30-40 times that then the Atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Eeeek! That's something! As Elena said, the communists didn't let a lot of information out.. even to their own people.

Thanks for that, Dur.
