Got a few projects I want to do -- any ideas where in the southeast or Kansas city area I can get good prices? Drive a semi, so any place I can fit in and grab some is cool with me! I live in midwest Tn, so any thing in that area would really be cool! Thnx!!!

I called two suppliers yesterday and there was a price difference of $100.00 for 4X8 sheets of 1/4 inch plate,$400.00-$500.00. Unless you need it immediately they believe the price will come down soon since the price of scrap has fallen sharply. The $500.00 was in Columbia,MO.

I don't know where in your area but around here the scrap yard will sell steel by the pound and you can find some stuff there that you couldn't find new.

If you're going to be building many things it will pay in the long run to buddy up to a local machine shop or welding shop. You can usually buy quantities of steel you need at little profit to them if you can get them to add it to their orders. And small stuff they'll often just give you if it's sitting in the cutoff or scrap piles. Plus you'll get to know them so if you ever run into something you can't do on your own you'll be all set with someone who can.

I'm by our local shop at least once a week buying small amounts of steel or getting something or other finished...

Thnx for the ideas -- just no place in my county to buy, no scrqap yards and the hardware store is thru the roof -- went in for a 4 by 4 junction box and they wanted 10 BUCKS! I figured if I was going to drive just pick some up while I am in the semi! If there is a local welding shop I havent found it yet, sigh! Thnx again!

This may not be very useful but I have noticed that the price of new steel has gone way down. I priced some steel last month and priced it again a few days ago at the same place and it was about 40% less! Also, I noticed that there's a huge disparity if you shop around - there lots of competition in some metro areas.

I'm having trouble find a supplier in SE Michigan. What category do you look under in the yellow pages or in an online search?

I looked under steel wholesale in the yellow pages. But I'm fairly near Newark, NJ and there are dozens of steel suppliers in the area. Free delivery too.

I cant think of the places in kc. lived there about 4 or so years agao they had several large scrapyards visible from 435 just past the triangle. however you may have a hayday in wichita. the aircraft plants may have plenty of scrap and or damaged parts that you could pick up.

Spirit Aerosystems (former boeing commercial) in Wichita used to have lots of misc sizes of 3/16 steel plate for .20/lb. I bought some and a friend told me that it was cheap so I went back to get some more and it was all gone. I have been checking back for the last month and there is nothing there. Lots of full sheets of aluminum though. Even a few pieces of titanium sheet:eek:

I second stopping by any scrap yard you pass. In west texas I am paying .25 a pound. It is dangerous though... you drive in for just a few bits and pieces for a project, and suddenly you have half a ton of neat looking things that you know will work just right for something you won't be able to build for five years.

I'm still looking for $1/lb new steel around here. I think it might be mythical.

Last week I picked up 515 lb of steel tubing (4x4x3/16, 3-1/2x3x1/2x1/4, 2x6x1/4)at a local steel supplier/weld fab place. Cost me $1.67/lb sawed up per my cut list.

Checked all the steel scrap places around here before placing that order. Nada. All the scrap steel tubing went to China last summer when scrap was going for $400/ton.

This is pretty basic but the way I search is to use Google Maps.

1.Enter the city, state I want to search (e.g. Jackson, tn) and hit go.
2. Once the map is centered there, in the same search box, enter the business category (e.g. "steel" or "scrap"). You will get a nice list of business locations with markers on the map.
3. Look at the most relevent results for keyword ideas.

Here are the results of the search I described:

Results 1 - 10 of about 94 for scrap

a shortcut to do that is to type in "scrap, Jackson, tn" from a google or google maps search it will come back with a list and a map.
