I think he was merely saying put it on a scale that will read the 12v easily.
Correct dave, A digital meter will be within a range . Mine starts out at 20 & goes to 200 on the dc scale. If you have a harbor frieght store in your area, they offer these meters real cheap !
I went through this with my YM3000. But it was the Voltage reg. Deere wanted 180 then 118 for 2 similar ones. I carried it to a friends starter shop and he got some numbers and called back with a price for an electronic regulator no contacts was 26.50 for the part and 17.00 for overnite shipping.
