just curious...how many that use a g-mail account have read the entire TOS and UAs...???
Does it really matter whether you read or don't read. Bottom line google includes every gmail account in its data collection. That is why they offer the gmail acct with "free" 15 GB of storage. All the big boys troll the email accounts for data and then sell it.

Best way to manage email, but I did not propose it earlier due to the clear lack of IT understanding, is to host your own email server but that too is subject to inspection by the internet service provider unless you have a direct T1 connection and even then data is being inspected. I supplied backbone parts and services.
The next option is pay $4-8/ month and get your own domain and serve email out of there.

Email, regardless of where is served from is subject to inspection and collection.

It may be subject to...but they can't read it if it's encrypted...!

Nope. We all got a letter from the ISP, warning us that as of 1 February 2022 any and all emails would no longer be available and telling us to either save all the emails we wanted to keep in some kind of file, or forward them to the new email address. Direct quote from the letter: "As of this date, the server will be shut down and all emails stored there will cease to exist. There will be no way to access or restore them".
That's what I meant...I wrote it poorly. Not really 'always', but anyone should be able to save off emails so they are not lost forever...I tend to do that with important emails as I get them.

We should have a private conversation about encryption.

Another option is get your own domain name & set up e-mail there instead of g-mail. ISP is immaterial then and as long as you keep the domain, you have the e-mail. I use GoDaddy, but there are others. A forward on the old account to the new e-mail box (and/or change of e-mail auto response/new e-mail notice in sig line of new account) are methods I've used in the past. Just make sure you get your address of contacts if it's stored at current ISP on webmail or something like that. Good luck.
Two advantages of having your own domain name one; the security of being able to keep your email address regardless of how often you change internet suppliers. Second is that you have much more choice in selecting a name for your account I hate long email address as when giving over the phone or even in person to someone the longer it is the more likely for it to be written down wrong I have an A in the middle of my sir name so my email domain name is the letters past the A so my email is (the first two letters of my name)@(my domain name) . (the country code ) very short and simple and when people see it written down and know my name can easily remember my email

An option with SOME ISP's is an e-mail only account...you might check with your current provider...
That's what I did, since I have had the same email for ~20 years, ever since dial-up ISP access. Costs me $5.00 a month, and I send them $60 once a year.

Has anyone been successful in Wind stream agreeing to let you take your address with you when you moved on?

I suspect they will screw something up if given just half a chance.

Is that easy to do?

So far, most of this stuff is over my head.
It‘ll cost you monthly fee. I have some domains hosted through Go Daddy, but not email. Good customer support. They’ll talk you through it. You’ll have your own email address like bob@bigtiller.cam(purposely misspelled com for display). And you can call them with questions.

Gmail is free. You’ll have a gmail email address like bigtiller@gmail.cam or bob.bigtiller@gmail.cam. It’s very simple. However, there’s no one to call for easy support, so you’re kinda on your own. But there’s a lot of info on-line and help FAQs to get you the info you need to make it do the things you want to do.

I went the Gmail route. I know they track sites and target ads - but that’s the world these days. If one of the very largest companies in the world wants my data, does anyone really think having a non gmail account is going to stop that? May as well use it for the convenience it offers. (And unlike att, it appears I can keep it as long as google exists)

People are so naive...they just don't realize there is no such thing as a free lunch...!
Those that shrug it off and act like it's nothing are just plain ignorant...no offense to anyone but facts are facts...!
