Change Anti-Freeze Yearly?

Maybe... here is something else to think about tho: There is a reply in this thread about cavitation wet / dry cylinder sleeves.

I have a TN70A. I don't know if it has sleeves or not. But I did change from Prestone to antifreeze made for HD diesel today. Given the cost of this motor, no way am I going to do anything but antifreeze for a HD diesel.

The folks at TBN have so much knowledge. When I learn something, I do it.

Check your manual in the main section and see if it specifies the use of FW-15. If so, you can buy test strips and check to see if your new antifreeze is at the proper strength. if not.. the fw-15 is cheap.. like 4$ or something..

CNH sells a antifreeze addative called FW-15 to add to 'regular' antifreeze to prevent cavitation and electrolysis.

Ford makes FW-15 (actually now it's FW-16) for use in their PowerStroke Diesel motors. You are supposed to test your antifreeze with test strips made by Fleetguard (part number CC2602A). The test strips check for molybdate (as MoO4), nitrite (NO2), and the freeze point.

The bottle lists potassium hydroxide, sodium nitrate, and sodium nitrite under the warning section on the back. I assume it also contains molybdate.

I use it in my TC33D and my truck. Even if cavitation isn't a problem for my TC33D, using FW-16 isn't going to hurt anything.

The new "gold" coolant that they have been using for the past few years doesnt need it.. Engineering tells us that the additive is already added and adding more does no good. They event hinted that you shouldnt add more, but gave no good reason.. Just food for thought since you brought it up..

Who makes the "gold" coolant? What is the brand name?

What with the stability of ethylene-glycol and the difficulty in disposing of used anti-freeze, does it make sense to periodically add the additives (pump lubricant and corrosion inhibitors) but NOT change the anti-freeze? Could you combine this approach with a periodic cooling system drain and flush followed by refill using the OLD antifreeze solution and meet the cooling system's needs without ever doing an anti-freeze change?

The Geen's and tree huggers are constantly after us to do the right thing by the environment...which is fine by me. But it annoys me that there's always seems to be an objection if being "environmentally responsible" also happens to save money or effort.

The bottle of addative says to only add it till proper concentrations are reached.. thus the test strips... Thus adding more than needed wouldn't be good.

Some units that have coolant filters can also use filters that are pre-charged.. etc.
