Anybody know how to tell the difference between 3/8 inch grade 70 and 3/8 inch grade 40? chain. I have a new section of grade 70. The link width and length is different from another section of unknown grade. Does the link size determine the grade? Thanks, John.

The chain is hallmarked. There should be a marking every foot on a link that gives the chain grade. Cambell drops the 0 from the number, at least for common grades.

If the chain is worn, it may not be possable to tell.

Higher grade chain typically isn't heavier, it is higher strength steel. What you are paying for is the low weight for the strength. Otherwise, you could just buy a larger chain.

The grade on the hooks should not be less than the chain.
