Chain saw bar oil accidentially used in transmission

I checked my hydraulic dip stick today and it was below the upper mark. I was not watching what container I grabbed and started to pour into the transmission filler port less than a cup of the chain saw bar oil in (its reddish colour, talk about stupid) and realized what I was doing and stopped, and then added the proper hydraulic oil to top up. I checked the dip stick again to see if the oil had a red tinge to it and could not see any discolouration of the oil.

In your opinion is this going to create a problem given it was a very small amount bar oil?

Come to think of it, it's very difficult to see the oil level on the stick because its so clear. Why don't they add a little colourant to the hydro oil so it's easier to see the level on the dip stick?

No expert here but a less than a cup would seem to be a inconsequential. I guess if it were me... I would run a little test to see if the two mix easily and if they do, then sleep well.

Yup I was think of mixing a bit of each in a jar and see if they blend well. Will post tomorrow as to my findings.

If your the type that won't be able to sleep nights worrying about it get a Used Oil Analysis for about $30.

Blackstone labs is one place.

My M4700 takes 10 gallons of Hydraulic, I wouldn't worry about a cup of thickener.

Thanks for the replies. Considering how much hydro oil the transmission contains the chain oil is insignificant so I can sleep without adding Jack Daniels.

Assuming this is on one of the large tractors, then yea, a cup mixed with 10 gallons of oil aint anything to worry about. Less than 1%.

But in fairness, you didnt mention what it is on. A cup in the RTV may not be good, or anything that has a small amount of fluid. Or an auto tranny. But in a tractor, no big deal.

Oh, and they do make dye for hydraulic oil just so you know.
