Speaking of chain harrows, does anyone use the poor man's chain harrow.... a length of chain-link fence? How long? Do you use a log (or 4x4) on the leading and trailing ends? How do you hoist it for travel to/from the field?

I plan to use the skidder trails from a recent timber harvest as horse trails. I met my forester and timber cutter to lay out where the trails would go and how they would be connected. After the spring mud season, I plan to drag a chain harrow around to smooth out some of the slash and water bars left over from the operation. I can also use it to break up the manure in the pasture.

I Use a ATV chain Harrow that I got from Cabelas. I have seen other use a old matteres and take off all the padding leaving the spings and wood frame. I have seen some use plywood on top and small bricks for weights. It looked like the set up really worked pretty good. Dave

I have a heavy 6x8 chain harrow, but a neighbor uses your idea.. one of the poor man ones. He took a railroad tie, and wrapped some chain link fence around it.. a few times. Has a chain to either end and drags it from his drawbar. Uses a boom pole to lift it.

I've been towing with making a rig to use my poom pole to lift my harrow. Right now I roll it up first, then lift it with the pole. Would be muche easier to leave it 'ready'.

Rozett,

I have to warn you about using a chain link harrow! If you have roots, sticks, or tough grass mixed in your soil, the chain links will clog in no time.

Mine became so clogged it looked like a monstrous big hedge hog. No salvaging it, as it would have taken 2 days to pull out the junk.

Now you got me wondering - do you think I'll run into the same problem (clogging) with a regular commercial chain harrow?

At $200+ your chain harrow will be cleaned if it clogs up. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Doubt it would clog up enough to matter.
