Chain gang.

I didnt use chains last year to plow, but I feel I should have. Whats a good chain to use on my jd 2320 without leaving me poor and unloved from the wife? I have r4 tires unloaded. However, I plow with a bucket and added weight from the ballast box. Thanks all!

I added fluid to my rear tires on my 2320 when I bought it and hoped that would be enough. It wasn't. Last year I made chains out of 2 sets of triples that are used as tire chains on a big truck. Took a little work but they fit pretty good. I cut the outside off and it fit. The tire chains were free so it didn't cost anything. Made a huge difference. Good luck.

Have you tried tirechains.com. I have a set of Duo-Grips that I use to use on my 2wd tractor, really made a big difference. You might want to try loading your tires first.

Not to be disagreeable, but I have loaded R4's and it doesn't help all that much unless you are on flat ground. I used to clear by bucket with the backhoe mounted and still got stuck.

If you have any sort of slope to deal with, chains are the way to go. When clearing snow with a bucket, you typically need to go off the driveway to push snow back, so any drainage dip or swale along the drive is an unchained tractor trap in a smeary snow or packed ice.

Dave were you dealing with a 2wd or 4wd tractor? Knowing about Maine winters I'm not sure anything would really help. My brother-in-law lives in Freeport and owns 30 horse JD with a FEL and ocasionally has to get a guy in with a full sized wheeled loader to really dig him out. An FEL can only pile it so high.
