Have an old cement mixer looks like it would do about 10 or so 60 lb bags at a time-more or less. Big heavy gears (turns easy) & grease pot lubrication for bearings. Looks to be from the 30s, 40s or maybe 50s. All metal with frame. Small metal wheels at one end, small tounge to tow at the other. Would be easy to convert to a 3pt (for using in rough ground areas). Three questions:

1) Any suggestions on whether it would be better to use the pto to drive the mixer or a small gas motor (originally it was electric I think)?

2) Anyone know the rotational speed in rpm of the barrel/mixer for best mixing? (So I can calculate the needed diameter of the power source pulley to turn the existing barrel pulley at the proper speed).

3) The idea of using 3pt is that a small trailer to haul pre-mix & water could be towed behind, however, I suppose I could simply use ballon tires instead on the mixer but that would pretty well eliminate a wagon. Thought was if wet mix needed to be lifted, could use a concrete bucket (which has pour "spout") on loader arms (skid steer type attachment) to pour from top, i.e. drop dirt bucket, attach concrete bucket, hook up mixer (3pt), load trailer and take whole thing to remote site. Drop trailer & position concrete bucket near mixer (takes less than 30 seconds to drop/change), mix concrete, pour in bucket, drive around reattach concrete bucket to tractor, lift and dump into forms. Would be a lot easier than one of these tiny mixers (plastic) at Lowe's etc, in areas you couldn't get a concrete truck into. Any thoughts on this approach?

Thanks.

A five horse gasoline motor will spin a nine cubic foot mixer, the biggest available normally, just fine. The cachet of course is the motor has to be a gear reduction drive.

I have an eight horse Honda on mine and I keep it just above idle and make great concrete a third of a yard at a time.

Here you go. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forumfiles/275758-Image001.jpg

I have an old electric mixer that had seen its share of cement. A friend told me I could have it if i could use it. I got to looking at it and thought it'd be great for a pto unit. I turned a collar down to weld to the mixers shaft to mate it to the 1 3/8 pto. It dumps to the side so you can load it one on won side and pull next to your form and dump. I had to build a small sub frame for the mixer legs out of 2 inch square tubing.

Sounds like a good idea, do you have a picture?
I have an old electric mixer setting in the barn I would like to try to mount on my 3 pt.

My Dad built one that used a capacitor start, 1/3 hp, electric motor, they usually run aroun 1700 rpm unloaded, I couldn't tell you how much slip it had loaded but it worked pretty good.

Jim, Ill try to get one in a few days, Its loaned out to a contractor freind of mine putting down a decorative border around his house. Hes mixing it i nthe tractor and dumping it into the border machine. It looks ragged as heck from the years of use. its also good to put bricks in and take the rind off walnuts.

More than one blacksmith has found out a mixer makes a great cleaner for small parts. Add a little sand and small gravel, stir.

BTW Taylor thanks for the link to the grader site. It's a help.

No problem on the grader link, Talkin about the mixer when i was 16 I worked for a maintenence contractor. He had built them a big vat to deburr castings with it. It had some washed gravel and put theses big hunks of iron in them to deburr. The vat was an old truck mixer he poured a slab and bolted it down and had a power unit running the drum motor. Last month another fella bought it and had me cut a few 4by 8 foot holes in 3 sides. I put in a 3/4 inch thick woven grate metal on these holes and he used it for a compost and topsoil screen. I may do this on a smaller scale for my tractor mixer.

Thanks. The gas engine looks easier to mount. 5 hp are reasonable enough (and simpler than a gear-box, or at least a bearing mount, for the PTO). Nice pic - looks about the size I have.

Thanks to others who responded. Anyone know the rpm requirement of the mixer barrel (not the motor - the mixer barrel)??????????????

I had 2 mixers; 1 rotated @37 rpm, the other @ 50 rpm

Thanks. Wasn't sure but at around 40-45rpm M/L for the mixer barrel I can calculate the necessary diameter of the driving pulley needed to get the mixer barrel to turn at that rate. Thanks again.

Did you have a chance to get some photos of your 3pt conversion cement mixer?
I'm going to have some time to work on such a project next week.

Hopefully in 2 more days my film will come back. I need to get wih the 21st century and get a Digi cam but always end up spending that money on a new tool lol. The best way to build one is to make a sub frame to fit your mixer legs. Then put the drum perpendicualar to the tractor so the input shaft is facing the pto. just make a sure the PTO shaft has enough cearance in the three poing hookup. I made one to fit a friends cary all last week. Ill check with the drugstore tomorrow to see how they are comming with the film. Take care Taylor Lambert

HI Taylor, Have you got your cement mixer back yet?
I hope to have a little time to start converting my old electric to a 3 pt soonand your photos would sure help.
I have some posts to set for a new honey do project I got myself into by telling the wife, "I can do that little job in my spare time, no problem"
A man should learn to keep his mouth shut some time, but I never learn it seems.
