The poppy seeds jammed more than a few…
"A drug test may detect poppy seeds in the urine within just 30 minutes of eating the seeds and for up to 48 hours after consumption. If a person consumes large doses of poppy seeds, traces of opiates may remain in their system for up to 60 hours."

"Now the good stuff that people like is all over the scale.

  • For most short-acting opioids (morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, and heroin), your urine drug test should be negative within 24-72 hours.
  • For longer acting opioids (such as methadone or buprenorphine) it may take a week or more.
  • Fentanyl is a special case and may take several weeks."
"Now the good old Mary Jane is the King. It will stay with you for a month.

Cannabis: 7-30 days in urine and up to 2 weeks in blood. Cocaine: 3-4 days in urine and 1-2 days in blood. Codeine: 1 day in urine and up to 12 hours in blood. Heroin: 3-4 days in urine and up to 12 hours in blood."

Don't consume poppy seeds and don't do cannabis so I guess I'm good and a pee test has mostly been replaced with a hair pull anyway.

Maybe I missed it but if the original question was not specifically addressed there are companies available for random testing. I am an owner/operator with hazmat so I am subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Since I am an owner/operator I obviously can't test myself. I use HireRight to meet compliance. You will get a quarterly draw notification letting you know if you have been selected from the national pool they have placed you in. It's like winning the reverse lottery where you drop what plans you have and pay as well to get tested.

I do not currently drive a commercial vehical but I renewed my CDL when I renewed my license back in Dec. I have the "S" endorsement which used to mean a physical yearly but now that is two years like everyone else. However, health issues require me to keep up the yearly check up.

Since any employer would require an up to date test, I am just going to do what my neighbor who's situation is similar and not worry about it.

The last company that I drove for had a random sample. I wish that I could pick lottery numbers as well. I was always getting popped.

If your not actively driving as a CDL driver I would do the same as you are not going to be subject to audits. If you started operating as an owner operator you would need to, or as a driver for a company, although the company would take care of it on their end.

LOL, when I was thirty, I quit driving, went to school for electronics, got 20yrs in high tech until that went bust. Went back to driving. Moved to KY. Got a job in aerospace which fell under FAA rules so more drug tests. Also, picked by computer. Guess who got popped regularly?

I was incorrect. It is federal mandate, not insurance company mandate.

As far as keeping your CDL even though you are not using it, I believe most (if not all) states have a CDL category "intrastate" (means in state only, in ND it is a "Category 3" CDL), where a MEC card (Medical Examiner Certificate) is not required to be filed with the state (or renewed). HOWEVER, if you are still driving a CDL required vehicle with that Category 3 license, then you still need to have the MEC card on you anytime you're driving that vehicle. BUT if you are not driving a commercial vehicle, you don't need to get or keep a MEC card at all. Many retired or semi-retired CDL drivers do this to "keep" their CDL even though they are not using it and don't really plan to use it in the future.

Renewed my driver's license. Come to find out i am grandfathered in on the med card. So i kept my commercial license. Apparently I don't need the med card until I drive out of state? That was a surprise.

If you drive commercial in state, you will still need to have a MEC card on you while you are driving that commercial vehicle. The main difference is the state (WI in your case) isn't requiring you to have a copy of that MEC card on file in the state system (which is actually tied to the national system).

However, don't be tempted to stray out of state as a commercial driver in your case. Big fines. Big legal problems.

Random urine tests are driven by insurance companies, not your local state DMV/DOT. Usually it's the company that you drive for insurance company requiring it as part of their coverage for that company. So the employee's "company policy" drives the urine test requirement to satisfy their insurance company. This includes self employed drivers, your insurance company is the driving requirement for the urine tests.
This is not correct. It is mandated by federal DOT regs. We as a company are required to have a written drug and alcohol testing policy as well as have all drivers that meet the below requirements enrolled in a random testing program. Good link to info here

All CDL drivers operating commercial motorvehicles (CMVs) (greater than 26,000 GVWR, ortransporting more than 16 passengers, includingthe driver, or placarded hazardous materials) on public roadways must be DOT drug and alcohol tested. This applies to any driver required topossess a CDL, including those employed byFederal, State, and local government agencies,“owner operators,” and equivalently licensed driversfrom foreign countries. Part-time drivers must also be included in an employer’s drug and alcoholtesting program. Drivers who only operate CMVson private property not open to the public do notrequire testing.

Does this apply to AG within so many miles of the farm?

Brother has a gooseneck used for the farm… because the trailer is over 10k and not recreational it’s commercial but then there is a AG exemption within a radius of the farm.

You are correct.

I see a lot of independent drivers and farmers here that I personally know have NEVER had a "random" drug test.

Interesting.

AG exemption does not require a MEC card. But it is within 150 miles of the farm, and can only go out of state if that neighboring state has a reciprocity agreement with your home farm state. There are other limitations, no doubles/triples, etc. And I think the vehicle has to be registered with the home state as an "Ag" vehicle.

I knew there had to be some exemption because the ranchers and farmers never take urine tests but all are close to home…

Jello(collagen) will make you pass a urine test for THC if your concerned - worked for me several times when I was in high school and on probation :)

I honestly don't know what type of exemptions exist for ag. We are transporting pyrotechnics so we fall into a low explosive hazmat carrier. I've gone through 4 full DOT inspections of our business over the last 20 years. Driver, drug, training, transport, packaging and there is a lot of misinformation posted in forums in regards to DOT.

I don’t know any users… even recreational that are gainfully employed.

I do know a person that was random drug tested with his entire department and he failed… those double poppy seed bagels will do you in.

For about 10 years the hospital leased space to an occupational clinic and most of their business was drug testing and physicals…

I had to be DOT trained/certified for medical waste because I sign the manifests…
