States with high concentrations of labor unions really took hits.
Most companies are non union in Michigan. Only the big places are union. Maybe 10% of the jobs lost were union. Union, non Union, nobody can compete with cheap labor, cheap matierals, cheap shipping, no or low tariffs. I have friends of mine that had their own shops, non union, and thier customers source their jobs into china or mexico. They got told that they have to compete against the world. In some cases, they couldn't buy the steel for a die for what the chinese charged for a delivered final product.
In other words, unions had nothing to do with it. Competing with countries with non existent wages is impossible.
