That is STRICTLY due to the American Angus Association's efforts since 1978 when they began the Marketing ploy of 'Certified Angus Beef'. They got together and pushed the 'thought' that Angus beef was the 'premium beef'. Now, you can't go into a restaurant without seeing 'Angus steaks' on the menu. It really has been one of the best STEALTH marketing campaigns with one of the biggest outcomes of which I know.

The funny thing is... you basically only have to have 51% Angus... to obtain the certification. Although, I think they have instituted some carcass characteristics which need to be met now. Which is funny, because a lot of those characteristics are likely to change, with the changing thought of how we eat. Specifically, smaller steak sizes are becoming much more popular. And I think one of the required characteristics for 'Angus' was to have a relatively large 'Ribeye'.

Your description is better than mine. The PR campaign worked well!

To the point that an all black cow going through the ring will generally bring more than another regardless of certification.

What one of the old cattle guys told me is they have a guy that just walks around black cows and says.. this one is Angus, this one is not LOL.

I too many now get a few young steers when I finish my fences completed. Get them in the spring, let them eat grass until about october, and take them to the stock yard for sale. .

If I were to get a cow to keep, it would be a Jersey. I think they are a nice looking cow

I will be calling the local USDA office soon. They tell me they will use your tax dollars :D to cross fence my property for cows, as long as I have perimeter fence up

If they pay any on my fencing, will be pennies compared to what the government pays out to the big boys !

One of my late father in law’s favorite sayings: what cows don’t tear up, they will sHe-ite on.

There’s no way we make back what we spend. One of my favorite sayings is We have more cows than grass. For us it is a hobby. Most of ours are like pets and I can walk out in pasture and pet on most of them.

One thing that caught my attention was 25-30 dollar round bales. I have not seen that in quite a while. Last several years the big rolls around here ( 5 1/2 x 6 ) were going for $50-60. This year it never quit raining so guys couldn’t get in the field to cut and bale. I had to give $85 per roll and that is the 4 x 5 smaller bales. And was told it was going up. For us it would probably be cheaper to pay the taxes without the tax exemption.

I just can not sleep at night taking money from the government . There are plenty of programs available and after the hurricane and I have had several calls on it but all they care about is getting their hooks in you and you have to allow inspections and they tell you exactly what they want done and how to spend the tax payers money. NO THANK YOU. everything I have, I have paid for or am paying for. The government interference is why farmers are struggle to make ends meet. Its no different than food stamps in my opinion.
