Cattle guards - make or buy

And there's always the painted cattle guards. Basically stripes painted on the road surface, they seem to work, but i don't have much experience with them.

Was gonna mention that, but you beat me to it.
Remember seeing those on a road trip I took out west 30-odd years ago. Does it actually work?

People actually buy ore made cattle guards? I doubt I’ve been over more than a couple of those. The vast majority, here, are made on-site, using whatever materials are available. Railroad rail is very popular, as is pipe and angle iron.

The oil patch I work in has hundreds, maybe thousands of shop made guards. I made a few of them. The tops covered with 2 and 7/8ths tubing and the frames 5.5 something well pipe and made in the shop. Welding efficiency does not go up in the field.

The people i knew that had them said they worked. I imagine you put enough pressure on a cow, you might get them to cross over it.

Well, those fake guards will only work if your cattle are used to cattle guards. If you'd really like to keep them in or out, might need to use the real ones. The patch I worked in, they were all real.

This cattle guard will be at an entrance near a highway so I don't want to try the painted version. I would try that if it was less critical.
