Cat type reverse box slipping

I have a 1958 Gallion off-road crane that has a Cat type automatic reversing box that sat too long and the clutches varnished up . It slips like crazy ( as in barely wants to move ) . Can I fill that thing up with kerosene, or alcohol or ?? and let it sit for a month or three to get that thing to grab? Thanks.
