case IH 585
I am having some issues with my 585. After running for a couple hours, it will loose power and start blowing black smoke, If i mash the clutch in it will rev back up and the exhaust will clear up. release clutch and it will act like its bogging down and go back to blowing the black smoke. I shut it down, come back the next day it runs fine for a couple hrs then it will do the same thing. I just replaced the air, fuel, coolant, oil and oil filter. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Davis

I've got a friend that has a 585....he had the same problem about a year ago...they found the fix is the short fuel line from the pump up to the injector (I think that was it...it seems to me that it was about 8 or so inches long and goes sort of straight up) has a tendency to heat up and collapse over time.. its not all metal, but a hard rubber substance... they replaced it and it has worked perfect ever since....don't have the tractor around here so I can't get a pic..sorry. Black smoke looks like over-fueling due to high load. Something is loading the engine up in example brakes not releasing, bearings on implement seized and that sort of things.

One thing that just came to mind...whenever a diesel start to smoke black even when not under load, its can be because the air filter is clogged/not letting enough air to the engine....blow it out and see if it clears up. BobG in VA

It wad alredy stated that the filters were changed. I would bet on it being a collapsed fuel line. After the engine heats up enough to realease enough heat to soffen the line. I would try running it until it blows smoke then check the line.

Sorry to get off topic here but there is one of these up for auction today..our backhoe is completely hooped..can you use these for clearing trees and making a dugout or not? If so, and it is a reasonable cost I might bid on it..please let me know what these can be used for a.s.a.p.

G,Day davis criddle.
Check these out when the tractor is black smoking all rubber hoses on the air intake system and make sure there is no chance of a hose collapsing and choking the engine, also when the tractor plays up remove the muffler and see if that makes a difference ,do all the easy things first.

Hutch

Thanks to all of you, who took the time to help me out. Last night I installed a new temperature gauge, and bushhogged for a couple of hours. It never got above 160 or so. It also did not give me the problems that i stated in my 1st post. But, it it had rained all day and the temp was in the 70's instead of 90's like it has been. One thing I did notice last night was that my brake pedals were hard to push, and it took very minimal movement to engage the brakes, where previously they seemed soft and you really had to mash them down to get them to engage. (so I wonder if the brakes were engaged causeing the engine to bog down?) If work allows me, I plan on running it tonight and checking everything everyone had metntioned. And go from there!
Thanks to all,
Davis

I do believe the problem is the brakes. Whenever it starts to act up, the brake pedals are as hard as a rock, they are all of the way up , and u cant mash them down anymore. Anyone have any ideas what is causing this or how to fix the problem please let me know.
thanks,
davis
