Case 580C shuttle shifter wont work

Bought a well used 580C Backhoe. It was working fine and I was replacing hoses and fixing leaks. The transmission still works fine. The shuttle shifter is the problem. In the forward position it wont move. in the neutral it is in forward. In the reverse position it is in neutral. It can only be started with the tractor in reverse position. or with the transmission out of gear. It works in neutral for forward. I checked the linkage and it rotates the shuttle shifter from lock to lock. I removed the Pan and cleaned the pickup screen and replaced the fluid. Is this an adjustment or a failed part? Is it easy to repair in the field? any insight would or advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like a problem with the linkage.
I would check for a sheared pin or key having the linkage in the wrong position. I have seen pins and keys shear and then lock in a different position causing similar problems.

Thanks Stimw for the reply. I already visually inspected the linkage and it seems to work well. I will crawl under it and take the linkage off and see if I can shift it manually from underneath this weekend.

Check the joint where the shuttle control rod comes apart for service. Just a couple of clamps and a roll pin to hold it together. The one on my 480C has plenty of slop, and only showing a little over original 2200 hrs. Here is a link to an exploded view of the control rod linkage. I know you said it was moving the selector from stop, to stop. But then, maybe not...
