I have located a 580 B Case Backhoe that is in pretty good overall condition with 2 exceptions. Clutch is beginning to slip in higher gears and has already been adjusted to the max and jumps out of 1st gear low range occasionally--Comes with 16 ft pintel hitch tilt trailer with duals. In the field working, loaded 10 dump truck loads dirt yesterday. Asking $7000 for all. Is this fair price and what about cost to put in new clutch (parts and labor)? Any input appreciated-Thanks, Ken Sweet

Is the whole machine that price? If it's in relative good condition, I think that is a fair price. If it's the late model case 580B's that is. B series refers to many differen't 'models' of that machine, not specific like the C's, D's K's etc. This pic. I attached is a late model B. You will never find a B in perfect condition due to the age, but 7 grand seems like an okay price. It looks good, runs okay, no major slop in the machine and no bad noises when working? I'm not too sure on the price for clutch and all.

P.S. This backhoe happens to have a 580E hoe attachment. But you get the picture. This guy obviously took good care of the machine. At least from the picture standpoint, got to test it to know for sure. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Blake--The price of $7000 is for the entire machine with the trailer included also--It is just like the one in the picture(except for your upgrade)--I ran it a while yesterday afternoon and no excessive smoke, noises or obvious major problems--about 1/2 of the hoses have been replaced recently--If I buy it? I would a install a couple new bushings in the bucket and put on a new seat--Other than the 2 things mentioned earlier on the earlier post, It does fine mechanically. I checked the clutch at full throttle in high range high gear and the motor will almost stall before the clutch slips. I may be able to get a year of 2 out of the clutch before going into that--I really appreciate your help--Thanks--Ken

Well, I think that's a decent price for both machine and trailer. I'm curious, I'm not too sure what you mean by the clutch, is this a '6 speed' machine? The ones I used were both 6 speed, and when using it to do work, you keep it in first unless you are traveling a bit then you pop it into 2nd or maybe 3rd gear. I'm talking about the lever on the floor between your legs. Could you explain a little more what you mean by high gear etc. etc.?

It is the drive clutch--This one is a 4 speed with hi and low range--High Gear would be in High Range and in 4 th on the shifter--Ken Sweet

I made the purchase and brought it home today--I dont think I will need the clutch job for a couple years and I have got a estimate of $450 parts and labor, If I need it before then. I plan on replacing 2 bushings in the bucket and adding a new seat tomorrow and I will be ready to do some major projects around the farm. I have been putting them off for way too long---Ken Sweet

Ken, nice machine, that other pic. I showed you wasn't one I ran. These two images are the ones that I used. I don't work for them anymore. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I left mine in the shop on concrete last night and this morning, I did not find a drop of oil in the floor. I was pleasantly surprised. I will get a picture of the tilt trailer posted as soon as I get it home--We were discussing the 6 and 8 speed tranmissions earlier and This machines 8th gear is almost too fast for me until I get some hours under my belt.--Ken Sweet

Very cool Ken. Yeah, the higher you go in gears, the crazier it gets! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif But, you can't work with all your power if you are in 3rd or higher gear. 2nd is the highest you wanna go, you just lose power if you do.

in our '70, with the hydro clutch, and 4 speed, you can do most loader work in second gear, unless your really bulling, or pushing something.. the hyd shuttle is a nice feature though.

i wish ours had the newer style hoe like yours though

Hi Blake, that sounds about right. I installed a new easy rider seat and suspension on mine and found there was no seat belt. I am planning to install one before I use it much. My shop foreman brought some pictures that were took when he was in power line construction down in Georgia several years ago. One shows 580B on its side after a 50-75 ft slide and rollover and the operator was saved by wearing a seat belt. Do the ones you are familiar with have the seatbelt or was that too early to be standard equipment on a Hoe?--Ken Sweet

No seat belt on the hoes I used. I'm not sure when they started putting them on. I can't really remember if the C's had them or not. Yeah, it's always a good idea to wear them, if I had one I probably would have used it. I don't use them now in the machines that I use at work (although I should, it's policy, but no one does) just because I'm not in them enough and on terrain that would need a seat belt. I work for a rental company that's is similar to United Rentals, so.....and of course we have updated new machines and they all have seat belts. Anyway....

So, what kind of work are you going to do with your backhoe?

Good Morning Blake--Thanks for input--One of the first things is to put a liner in a big goldfish pond (40X50 Ft)--I will dig around the top outside perimeter and tuck in the liner and then cover up--In addition, I have another larger pond that is for the cattle on the farm that has went dry and I plan on digging out the leak hole and try to pack something in there and seal it off--I guess the main project is for this summer is putting in some gas lines--I have 11 natural gas wells that will be going comercially on line and when they do, as the land owner, according to the oil and gas contract I signed, I will be entitled to 12 1/2% of the gas that is sold and free gas to my home and shops--however--I will be required to install the lines and do the hookups at each building.--Probably 1/2 mile of total gas line to put in?--Ken Sweet

Hey Ken, well, be sure to share photos of your work, I love seeing those kind of photos. Nothing better than seeing a machine in action! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
