I have a mid 70's model 480C that was missing the spring in the seat post when I bought it. after 5 years of no spring I bought a new replacement spring. I take it out of the box and it about 4 feet long. My question is how do you a 4 foot spring in a 11/2 foot tube? At the extended length the spring flops, when I try to compress it in the tube it shoots out the side.

Thanks, Scott

maybe a piece of pvc pipe or exhaust pipe would work

Just in case anyone is curious as to how we did this (luscsmith and I)... When you unbolt the seat stand from the backhoe and you turn the stand over, there is a hole that is a bit larger than the size of a #3 rebar at the end of the tube... From the bottom of the stand you can insert the rebar through the hole and the middle of the spring as the other end of the spring is inserted into the tube attached to the seat... Compress them all until the seat adjustor locks into place... Remove the rebar, turn the seat and stand back over and rebolt to the floor board... The husband's concern is the catapult action if the adjustor lets go (he told me to hold on!)... I would have taken pictures but my hands were covered in grease... Currently the husband is looking for a wife mover / work stand... At least he provides me with all of the tools I need to complete whatever job has to be done... Thanks!!! -the wife
