Thanks for additional explanation gittyup. I would say your good with 4-5 inches of gravel. I think I'm gonna put my car port project on hold. I've been working on it and my spot needs more excavation than I imagined. Gonna need a retaining wall for the shelf it would create making things level. Not sure what I'm gonna do.

I built a retaining wall in another location on my property. I used the stack and fill block. Results were excellent, but it sure was costly. It's 5' high and about 35' lone with a set of steps. Cost was like $3500! The big block make for the nicest wall and can be done without much skill. Just make sure to get the first course level and the rest is just stack and fill (not that it's not a lot of manual labor).

I also built another one out of utility poles held in place with pilon posts. Works good and cheap, but not the prettiest thing (but not hideous either). Total cost $350 for about 2.5'x35'. And, once the pilons are set, it's a very fast build.

I guess you don't have room to cut the wall down to make a mowable embankment?

I'll try and get some pics this weekend, calling for alot of rain though. I have a gentle slope leading to the area the building will be. I made it when I installed a retaining wall along the driveway. At the bottom of this gentle slope is where the excavation begins and it's nearly 4 foot higher than the low side where the other end of the building will be. I even borrowed excavation equipment to make things go faster. I'm just not in the mood t build a retaining wall. At a minimum I'll have to install a swale to divert water from the building but I think it will be in the way of my travel route along side the building.

Just to finish the thread. Now my backhoe attachment and trailer will have a roof over their heads! Swallows up my CK.

Thank sEarl. It's good to finally have a place to park the backhoe. Will probably post one last photo when backhoe and trailer in their new home. Everytime I take the hoe off the tractor, its seems it's in the way, and tarping it was the best I could do for weather protection. So, I would just store it on the tractor under the leanto. Not so convenient when you want to use other 3PH implements.

Planning to do that myself soon using ck30H and 5' boxblade for same sort of building, all info/pics very helpful! That's quide an excavation, didn't know the BB would do that.

Yeah, when I first saw a bb I didn't see how it could dig all that well. But, after you pull one just once, you understand how good it can work. Like peeling a potato. Of course, the heavier your bb, the better. Mine is really heavy, a 6' gannon. Would guess 700 lbs or more with the thickness of the components. Don't use it often, but when needed, it's the real deal. Mike, you shouldn't have any problem leveling your pad. Just start doing it. Before you know it, it's done.
