I seem to be getting a lot of carbon build up, and collecting, in my exh pipe. I have Yanmar YM2500, has on oil burning problem that I suspect is broken, or stuck oil rings. Just haven't had a chance to repair yet. wonder if my upcoming ring and bearing replacement will correct the exhaust carbon problem?? tractor starts and runs great. even on the coldest days. any thoughts?

I would suspect that you have weak valve seals and possibly loose valve guides allowing oil to be sucked into the exhaust stream and partially burnt - leaving the residue.
Rings would make it hard to start from low compression, especially noticeable on cold days.
Do a wet and dry compression test by pulling a glow plug or injector. (varies by engine design) You will need a diesel tester that goes to 500 psi.

I agree with John Bud. With bad valve seals it'll smoke but still run good. With bad rings it'll run bad. I would pull the valve cover and take off the valve springs and put on valve seals. If it starts smoking again you'll have to pull the head and replace/insert/machine the valve guides and install new seals again.
