carb problems

i have a 22hp kohler command engine that is in a 3240 cub, the problem is when you give it full on it seems as its flooding out . the only way it will run is you have to choke it a little then the rpms dont seem to get up there.

I would do a compression and spark test before you do anything... if all is good there I would clean the carb. Usually you can clean a carb without any new parts... take apart and clean with carb clean (all passages) and compressed air. If it has an adjustable low speed jet; I would bottom it out while counting the turns then remove for cleaning so as to be able to put it back where it was originally. Then make final adjustment after starting and bringing up to operating temp.

Hmmmm it seems if you need to add choke a little, it's not flodding but starving a bit for fuel???
Check the fuel pump hose. There's a "vaccuum/pressure" hose from the fuel pump to the engine block fitting sort of near the oil filter. Mine the hose was worn and sloppy on the fitting."had to buy a new piece of hose ($2.00) to get a good tight fit. and we all know the importance of a good tight fit is!!!

I did a comp. test 150 psi on both cylinders,I ended up taking the carb. off for the third time and cleaning it again. that was the problem , put it back on , runs great. moral of the story is make sure you take your time cleaning carbs. do it right the first time.

I have ran into problems with carbs when there is a hard piece of material stuck in an orfice and carb clean or air would not take it out. After taking it apart a few times... finally taking the time to ensure each orfice is actually free and clear before the outcome is is good.
In most cases its varnish or debris getting in from the tank or a hose coming apart from the inside.
