I cannot decide which to buy. I currently own a bx2360 hst, a New Holland tl80 mech shuttle, and an older MF 255. I want a good midsize tractor to brush hog with, run a box blade, do fel work, and mow, and rake hay, and carry 5x5 round bails.

I spec'd a M6040 with hydro shuttle, 4wd, fel, bucket, spear, quick attach, 2 sets of remotes, and a top...$35,500

a Mx5100 hst, 4wd, loaded r1's, fel, top, 2 sets of remotes, bucket and spear.....$30,800

Both prices including a land pride 7' rotarty cutter, and a taylor 7' box blade.

My question is what do you guys think? Is the m6040 too big to go get through the woods? Would you even consider driving a tractor this size in your yard with out tearing the grass up? Would both these tractors run a 7' cutter in thick grass? Both tractors stable on steep grades with that much weight on the back?

What say you TBN?

hi. you have 3 existing tractors. what are your specific needs beyond your current machines that another tractor will do? will your new mid size tractor solve present challenges that your existing equipment cannot do? if you are looking for something "big", M series are certainly a cut ahead of grand L or Mx series.
but......let us know more specifically why you want to add more equip (& a payment) to your circumstance. best of luck!

First, the M6040 is far more tractor than the MX5100 as far as features. If you compare the physical size they are not that much different. So.....

>the M6040 is not too big to go through the woods compared to a MX5100.

>since you want to carry large bales, check the FEL specs of the FEL available to both

>anything that big should stay off of the yard

>the M6040 will be far less likely to bog down with a 7' cutter. Compare the PTO HP of both.

>any tractor is dangerous on steep grades. The best way to deal with it is to mow "up and down" rather than side hill - you probably already know that from your other tractors. A rotary mower is generally on the ground or lifted only slightly so may actually increase stability if the weight is lower than the axles.

All of this is my opinion, of course. Others may have more insight.

I have a lot of acreage to keep up with, and the MF is old with over 10k hours on it. It is getting in its age where i mainly run a hay tedder and small brush hog with it. The fields where we bail are sometimes a long distance from the barns they are kept in, so that means i have to load the goose neck, have someone drive the truck, then follow it back to barn, unload and start over again.

I will still want to bail with the NH. But i would also like to be able to pull the baler if i have to with the new tractor. Or pull my older MF model 12 square baler.

The new tractor's duties would be mainly fel work on roads, box blading, a lot of bush hogging, and running a fella disc mower and hay rake.

The NH is a large cab tractor, not ideal for upkeep on the roads to and from the hay fields that need some work. This is the reason for the midsize.

I also want a more mobile tractor. The NH is heavy. To much for a bumper pull trailer imo.

I would guess the M6040 would be all my new bumper pull trailer would want, but it too might be a little too much tongue weight.

GWDixon- I noticed in your sig that you own a 8' land leveler. I really want one of these. How do you like it? Will it cut down really compacted material? Do you think it would work on crumbled asphault?

The Bx stays at the house. Farm is 30mins away. The NH is the only tractor at the farm with a fel. The massey is old, and at times unreliable. So really all i have is one Big tractor. It does everything right now, and sometimes smaller is better in some tasks.

Just to muddy the water a little, I think you should also consider the M7040. I currently own a MX5100 and if we expand the farm again I will probably be looking at the M7040. It's going to be interesting to see how the Mx5100 handles the new airblast sprayer. The M7040 looks like a great machine and I think you can get HST with it.

The M6040 is will pull a 7footer no problem,I pull an 8ft will my M5040 in stuff over the hood,I even hook up to a 15ft batwing and clean-up the lighter stuff. I mow my yard all the time with a 12footer 5040 and ds1440.JPG its just going to depend on soil type if it will hold it up without rutting. The 6040 is not going to be near limited as the mx5100 will be,you'll have the weight and loader capacity there. May I ask why you skipped over the 5140 should fall in between the prices mentioned? The 5140 has slightly smaller tires but same frame as 6040,7040. My 7040cab,5040 open-stationtractor2.JPG

I have a M5040 and I love it! Great tractor. I think you would be very happy with a M6040.

Not sure this leveler is what you have in mind. I use it to flatten plowed or uneven fields. It works best with loose material. It makes a field look like a parking lot.

It may be even be homemade. Got it for $50 in an eBay auction - I was the only bidder.

It is controlled by using a drawbar on the 3PH. Lifting or lowering the drawbar will control the cut. And it is VERY heavy.

You can see that getting it back to the property on the trailer was an adventure.
