Cannot engage the parking brake

I have a GT 2544 that the parking brake will not lock. When I engage the brake and try and push the lock down it won't catch. It is rather hard to push down...thoughts?

When I push mine down, I have to let up on the pressure at the pedal slowly while keeping the lock pushed until I feel it catch. I think the release spring on yours may need adjustment.
