I need to plant some large seedling trees...my 12 inch auger is not big enough...I tried drilling two holes, doesn't work...

so, can my leinbach PHD run a 24 inch auger?

A lot of them don't, but some do. check your model on the company website, they probably will tell you.

Maybe, could depend on a lot of things.

Tractor you're using.

Soil.

May need to install a different shear bolt to handle the stress if the gear box can handle it.

In soft sand with enough engine power and a good bolt.......do it. In rocky clay with marginal tractor.....don't do it.

I use a 9 inch auger and punch 3 holes and dig out the rest with a spade and it works just fine

if you have problems first go slow or drill out 12" pilot hole then open it up tp 24"

That's a really good way to bind up your 24 inch auger when it takes a sudden bite in the hole. You will shear the pin or choke down your tractor, and the auger will be screwed in tight.

If it happens, use a big pipe wrench and a cheater bar to screw the auger out in reverse.

24 inch augers are a totally different animal.

If it has a clutch, no problem.

If the dirt is hard and dry, no problem. (although slow going)

If the dirt is moist and chewy, problem.

If your rear tires are filled with water, it helps a little.

I have dug holes for planting trees with an inexpensive 3pt PHD but it wasn't designed for bits that big. I have no rocks or roots but fairly hard black dirt. Kept tractor at near idle used higher grade bolt for shear pin. I did try drilling a 9" hole first but it is best to just dig with the bigger bit and no pilot hole. The big bit will grab too much when starting with a pilot hole. I used a bobcat 24" bit and made a pipe adapter for fit my PHD which had a smaller diameter. I also added an extra 100 lbs in suitcase weights on the PHD. I used a Kubota 3710 on the PHD. Too big of a tractor and something will probably break. I figured it was best to kill the tractor but this rarely happened. The key is to dig SLOWLY and be ready to raise phd quickly. I did about 15-20 holes, 2' deep.
