Can I jury-rig hose

. You can see the hole where the jet of fluid pierced his hand. They actually saved this guys hand. The jet of fluid did not do all that damage. A lot of the missing flesh is where they had to remove flesh saturated with hyd fluid.

The distinction between the damage of the oil entering and the damage the oil did after entering that guy's hand is hardly worth making. Downplaying the seriousness of fluid injection injuries does a disservice to the members here and the premise of the entire website. The fact that this hand may or may not have been saved makes little difference on my willingness to subject myself to a similar injury.

Of course the damage was significant. Nobody would want anybody to suffer anything like that. Most people know to be careful around high pressure hyd or steam or anything else.

This was an accident, and unwanted. This was an instantaneous burst, and he had no chance to move that quickly.

No one is down playing anything about the injury from high pressure hydraulics.

The picture is portrayed to emphasize the danger of hyd fluid, after all the fluid that could be scraped, cut out, sucked out, etc.

I have been hit with a pressure washing gun spray with 3000 psi, and about 6 in away from the nozzle, and I know how much it hurts. It didn't penetrate, but it felt like it did.

Don't know what you were really trying to say, but high pressure fluid is a danger to everyone. Enough said.

I think the point is that the picture speaks for itself. It's already worth a thousand words.

On a side note, you assumed that he was accidentally injected. It's a funny thing, human nature. Some people see a leak and try to stop it with their hand or fingers, without even thinking about it. I've seen it first-hand.

All this stuff should have been in the safety forum, but,

Read the article for your self.

injury caused by high-pressure fluid

Why even argue about this.

This ain't pretty either.

The sum of all this is to be very careful around high pressure hyd fluid.

Beware people. This is what can happen if you try to fix a hose by "Jerry-rigging" (fixing to something other than the manufacturers specifications).
injury.jpg

That is good to see. I played with hydraulics off and on and always wondered what would happen. I am supposing the same type of thing would happen with a 3500 PSI pressure washer. Yuck

Yes, the same type of accident does happen with a pressure washer. Probably many more. :(

Some types of jobs like cleaning tubes in a exchanger are very repiticious and lend themselves to accidents .:(

If we can get back to the original question...

How much will a new hose cost? That depends on a number of things, not the least of which is where you buy it.

You can get a five-foot long 1/2" I.D. 3,500 PSI hydraulic hose with male pipe or female JIC fittings for about $25 plus shipping at DiscountHydraulicHose.com

That's just an estimate. Since we make each assembly to your specifications, the price will vary according to those specifications. Still, the cost of a new hose for your backhoe should not give you a heart attack. Even after shipping, it will probably cost you less than dinner for two at a decent restaurant.

As others have already pointed out, it makes no sense to try and splice a 20 year old hose. Unless you've got something exotic, this is a simple and inexpensive replacement. Figure out what need (hose I.D., length, and the fittings needed for each end) and give us a call. We can make you a new hose for a lot less than you think.

I got my bill for 7 hoses made up. 3/8 hose + two fittings. They used 5,000 lb pressure hose with their name on it. 2-3', 3-4', 1-5', 16' cost $300.00.
They were extremely nice, helpful. I was using 3 of the hoses before they had them all done. Didn't pay until the end. I still have 4 hoses to replace. The one I snagged 10 years ago stays! 10 more years of life in it.

39 ft plus fitting, at $300 = $7.69 per ft.

Why 5000 psi hose, Did they had a lot of it?

Did you have any idea of the estimate before hoses were made?

seems kinda high to me.. based on what napa sells.. or even TSC...

I think he needed some hoses right then, and really did not know what the final price would be. It sometimes comes as a shock. They could have given an estimate, for 39 ft of hose, plus fittings.

/ Can I jury-rig hose #32
yep.. napa would. they'd tell you the hose cost.. the fitting cost.. the per crimp and per cut cost and that would get you 99.99437% of the way there. can guestimate tax from that and have a darn close total before anyone ever walks near the hose bench...

re hose:
They were set up for loggers and industrial size equipment. I think the hose was stocked with that in mind. It was all they did for a business. I find these places are not set up to deal with individuals. Their customers all have accounts and tax numbers. 20 years ago they would only have sold wholesale.
TSC didn't have the right fittings and the manager didn't have much experience. NHBraggs- always good, knew what I needed after looking it up, but out of stock on the fittings. Braggs sent me here- didn't want to- their competition. This place, Parkers- no problem, didn't blink. -came back with a just made hose 10 minutes after I gave him the junk one. He was missing some fittings which he had UPS send up from out of state.
After 2 hoses bursting and some culvert work waiting for me at home, and 6 loads of gravel on the way, I went with these. I knew it would be expensive- always is- especially when you need it.

I bought the backhoe 20 years ago for 2700 new. Have put about 1000 in repairs, motor upgrade, pump upgrade. Dug drainage ditches (wet clay/hardpan area), installed culverts, sauna columns 5' below grade for barn, miscellaneous sheds, fence posts 4' below, horse graves. Very useful tool. Rugged and simple to fix.

At my NAPA, 1/4 hose is $4.69/ft and fittings for 3/8 hose average above $10. So 39' and 14 fittings would be above $300. Those hoses - 4800 psi rated from Surplus Center with JIC6 or 8 fittings would have been about $110. For hoses with specialty ends you cant beat Discount HH.

I think $300 was a very fair price for the only place in town that could custom make the hoses. I'm sure they would have given an estimate if pressed. Sure you can shop around and find cheaper, especially online. There are also plenty of places that would charge double. When men and equipmemt are waiting around on a job site those parts are worth their weight in gold.

tcreeley, good job getting your digger back online with a quality fix and getting the job done. When multiple hoses are bursting that is a sign that they are all due for replacement. Those 2-stage pumps typically max out at 3000psi which is probably 700psi more than the OEM pump. More significantly, the higher flow rate will increase the stopping forces. When a valve shuts to stop motion there is no relief path.

tcreeley,

I retract what I said about the cost of those hose.

I went to my local hyd place and got a big shock, for the same hoses as stated. 4000 psi, JIC fittings. Only $414.00 WOW

So at $300, I would day you did better than the retail stores.

$145.00 plus shipping, from Surplus HYD. 5 -1/2 in hoses 39 ft with JIC fittings.

Surplus, Northern, TSC, etc will always beat the retail prices, if you can afford to wait.

The 6000 psi hose estimate was $782.00 Double WOW.

http://www.discounthydraulichose.com/ShoppingCart.asp

7 hoses, and no idea the charge to crimp 7 hoses.
