My place has been a never ending, ongoing project too. Unfortunately, I tend to get it wrong the first two times, and hopefully I'm doing better on my third time. Fencing is the best example of getting it wrong. What has surprised me more than anything is the amount of time I spend working on my equipment. I have a small shop, but it's just big enough for my tools. I should of built a big shop first, and then the house, roads, fencing, pastures, barn and everything else afterwords. I had no idea how much time I would spend trying to figure out why it's not working, how to fix it, were to get the parts and then actually doing the repairs. And that's faster, easier and cheaper than finding somebody to do it for me.
For this property, one of the priorities needs to be a building to store and repair everything. Once you buy a tractor, it's just a matter until something breaks on it. Maybe something simple like a busted hose, or something more involved. Whatever it is, fixing it will become the most important thing that has to be done right away. Having a place to do this, no matter the weather, and a place to have all your tools, is just about the most important thing when owning land.
