You have some projects ahead and like jjeff said above you will look back and think about how your work has paid off.

One thing to consider. Does it make sense to put up a barnomonium closer to the road instead of upgrading the cabin? Upgrading and maintaining a one mile driveway might get expensive, and it is long way to clear for a weekend at camp in the winter. With a barnominium you will be set for decades, and it will increase the value of the land if you every sell it. Plus, it gives you a place to camp and store your equipment.

My neighbor moved a cabin about 1 mile down a two track, and we had to cut down a dozen trees to get it through some tight spots. You may not have that option from the sounds of it.
We do not own the property at the road. Our starts 1 mile in.

So is it Bailey rd that needs repair? Or I'm I looking at someone else's cabin? If so is Bailey rd on state or national forest land? How far off 41 are you?
Baily road is below, but did find some maps off. Its 3 miles south of Cov.

So this one isn't it?

This is shelf rock country and the owner said you can't put in a sand point.
I don’t understand what either of those things mean. Can you elaborate?

Rules vary widely, but here, for a CO (certificate of occupancy) sewer (septic in this case), water (well here), access, and grid tied power would all need complete prior to CO. I have no idea how things in Mich work.

One work around here; you get an irrigation well permitted (for your agricultural operation, wink wink), with a power pole, and a 20amp receptacle permitted; 40 amp 240v for well, 2 20amp,120v receptacles; but you pull wire for 200 amp. Once everything is closed out, boom, you wire as you please. Then you can add your camper, camp, whatever, and your diy, unpermitted septic, ect.

Not saying good, bad, or should vs shouldnt; just how people do it.
So you can’t be off grid?

So you can’t be off grid?
Not an occupied dwelling, they have to have heat, running water, hot water, and power (actual power, not solar or generator). I really think its most aimed to avoid a bunch of homeless shacks in the woods. The whole shed conversions, all that. There may be ways to get a variance for some extreme stuff, like you live on an island or something, that might cost a few million to run power too.

My county does allow an RV for an unlimited amount of time, but only as long as there is an real dwelling on the property. So, house and RV is fine. Just RV I believe is limited to 90 days.

On water, it does appear there is may be an option for a cistern, but im not sure the requirements, as it must be Potable and the system must meet pressure requirements. So, what treatment and pump system looks like, idk.

Also, it looks like technically, a non grid tied solar system is legal, provided it meets all the other requirements, which could be as low as 100 amps, 240/120 system, depending on size.

What that ISN'T is a few solar panels, a 12v battery bank, and a power inverter.

But as I said, things vary state to state. Is the dirt road to the south good enough for commercial propane delivery? A 500 gallon system would go a long way to reducing load on what ever electric system you come up with.

FL does not have remote hunting camp cabins in the wild parts of the state? I know that there are large tracts that not "developed" but hunted by their owners.
Without digging here is an example. Off grid, well and septic (I would assume.) on ~40 ac parcel.

Legally permitted, probably not. Basically, to do everything, a off grid system is likely Far more expensive, short of unique situation, like Rat Island, which doesn't have homes; Hog Island does have a dock, air strip and a home, but im not sure if they have power, Drayton Island has power, and a ferry, and about a dozen or so homes.

Now, do folks do it? Yep, old used single wide or a shed, a power pole for their Irrigation well, as i mentioned, and live in it, yes, permitted, nope

But anyways back to this specific property, first step is access. A mile long drive that is accessible by commercial vehicles is a challenge, for propane, materials, ect.

I don’t know what zoning and other regulations cover Arly’s new place. In Illinois throughout most of the state no one is going to care what happens on a piece of property like that. There is no certificate of occupancy required. If you did put in a well and septic it would require an inspection in my county but just for those items.

I think Arly is saying the rock is shallow so a sand point well can’t be done.

On water specifically, it seems like the water table is very shallow. If the water quality is OK, i would consider a very shallow well, pumped to a tank, and treating it. Bringing a proper well rig out there seems like a massive expense,

A couple of problems with that. If the rock is really shallow you won’t be able to get any kind of well in. Usually shallow wells won’t pass drinking water requirements but that might be ok. A tank would need to be buried up there because of cold winters but once again if the rock is shallow. They could just drain the tank when they leave which is an option.

They make a fantastic fire rings!
Of course the equipment to move it and manipulate it into a circle may not be "handy" to you.šŸ˜‰
Exciting times for you two!šŸ‘
Never thought about that one, thanks!

Even poor water is valuable at a camp. Showers, washing dishes, water for dogs etc does not need drinking quality water. Some filters can even make poor water safe, but I would bring in a few gallons of water for coffee, drinking and cooking.

For an occasional use camp, there are compromises that work. But I know women who will not want to stay at a camp with an outhouse. The OP has a younger family and things like that may not matter. IMO "making do" is very possible.

The situation with the road would be concerning. I can see some expenses there depending how easily accessible it needs to be year round. But the OP knows the area so he is way ahead of some citiot tackling it.
