I guess you made my point for me, your very very very small world on the peninsula and Santa Clara valley is not typical of much if not any of California. You environment and cage there is artificial, so is the housing market. HS

Except I live in East Oakland CA... very different from the Peninsula and Santa Clara...

The case could easily be made East Oakland is not typical of many places.

In my day East Oakland was the armpit of Bay Area. Still is... Yuk. How soon can you move. My sympathy. HS.

I'll be here as long as mom is... she does enjoy time spent in Washington immensely... that said it is too far from her grand kids and friends to pick up and move in her 80's...

Home paid off... garden and fruit trees she spent 50 years cultivating, great neighbors and 2k in property taxes so her social security covers all her needs.

Washington is OK if you like perpetual rain. What do they have, maybe two weeks of sunshine per year? Besides it's turned democommie to so there are no redeeming features. Then there's that big volcano up there that's ready to pop its top and bury have the population of the state in either mud and ash or be cooked alive in a pyroclastic flow.

Tough crowd...

Born and raised in California... when the Hospital where I work was being bought and we had to "Apply" for our jobs I decided to act and make my move to Washington... a place where I have a lot good memories...

An injunction was filed to stop the sale so job, seniority and all was preserved... but I had just closed on my Washington property... decided having a job was better than no job as the economy was going to pot and decided to rent Washington for the interim.

There really is no place quite as stunning and beautiful was Western Was looking out over the Sound with the Olympics in the background....

Till things settle... I have deep roots in Oakland CA...as 5 generations of my family have called Oakland home...

I remember the boarded up houses walking to school in the 70's that the city was selling for $1 if you moved in for 5 years and made $5k in improvements... paint and a roof would pretty much cover it...

I remember those $1 homes that are now selling for 350k and up.

I'm no fortune teller but experience has repeatedly shown California always comes back stronger...

I hear you but some folks are tied by their family, job, etc. Easy to say, 'just leave'. Not so easily done for everyone. Some don't have the genes, means, or greens to relocate.
Others... believe it or not, may like what you don't.

Population is growing and homes have more than doubled in value... so the demand can't be disputed.

I've never lived anywhere in the city with bad neighbors... didn't matter what race... most are simply doing the best they can for their families... and most were homeowners.

Not that it really matters but here are two examples of East Oakland homes to illustrate the market...

The first is a 1100 square feet 1922 Craftsman Bungalow on a 5,000 lot that sold for 350k

The second is a 1550 square feet 1960 home on 1/2 acre that sold for 600k
