The reports of the imminent demise of California have been exaggerated... borrowing from Samuel Clemens... Back in the 70's a very popular book was the Late Great State of California... then again many said there would be no Social Security for those retiring in the 1990's... I'm not defending California... only pointing out the folly of outlandish claims that only serve to suck people in... The Donor State is the perfect rebuttal to such statements... I do see a lot of Californians cashing out their windfalls and taking that money to other States... know a few that simply cash out without reinvesting... which I think is foolish because money is only worth what it can be exchanged for and sitting in a CD is not an investment. California dollars for better or worse are a driving force in neighboring states... especially Oregon, Nevada and Arizona... with Texas and Washington not far behind.
Actually the late 1970's was the end of California. HS

Having a stake in California, both business and family, I doubt there will never come a time without a California...

I have hedge my bet, but have found California is often an indicator of things to come... just like Catalytic Converters for cars... ALL of my friends outside California said it will never happen in their States... now I know never is measured in years.

That said... many have made the success and fortunes here whether they stay or not...

... and let's not forget California is the corporate home to Kubota USA

The NUMMI Toyota production moved to Texas and Canada... Tesla was quick to step in.

We truly enjoy our NUMMI Toyota and were able to see it built from paint to driving off the line.

Change is constant but there seems to be no shortage of companies willing to take over space as it becomes vacant...

In the SF Bay Area, rental vacancies are near all time lows and homes sales are brisk with overbids common.

Of course it could all change tomorrow and probably will... when you are number 1 there are always challengers... ;-)

This thread has brought out a side I didn't know I had... even if it is only speaking from my experience... now, don't get me started on the Air Quality Management District that has made it goals to eliminate older Diesels and Wood Burning!!!

Ah who needs clean air anyway. It's just a liberal conspiracy.

The region's air quality agency had forecast an unhealthy level of ozone, but readings fell short of that threshold. A similar warning continues today with a "Spare the Air" advisory against outdoor activity for at-risk people and recommendations to cut back on driving.".

What Bay Area residents don't appreciate is their clean air is made possible because the coastal breeze pushes all their smog 100 miles east, up against the foothills at the base of the Sierras. This photo is real, that's what it looks like coming down off the summit into that mess on a summer afternoon.

Tesla? They located their battery plant (the soul of the car) to just outside Reno, Nevada after their start in Cali. Chemicals and California don't mix unless you are hollywood (and even that don't mix well). Before you bash me I still have a piece of my heart in the bay area (Berkeley years).

Amazingly hard to have a data-grounded conversation on economy here on TBN. Folks give more thought to changing fuel filters than to the leading issues of the day.

Yes........and that is probably a good thing!

Got to respond...

I have attended the public comment phase on wood burning regulations and determined they BAAQMD was just going through the motions...

Even got one of the staff to admit burning properly seasoned wood in an EPA certified stove isn't the problem... yet the BAAQMD said it would be too hard to determine who burns clean so the bans apply to ALL wood burners and this really frosts me... you have people that have invested in clean burn technology... installed with permits and only use properly seasoned hardwoods and an agency can simply rule you can't use it and has it's own police force to back it up.

It wasn't all that long ago when President Carter urged all Americans to do their part to kick dependance on foreign oil and even offered tax credits for those that installed wood heat... the tide has turned to where billboards go up each winter urging neighbors to turn in neighbors anonymously to the smoke police...

At the hospital... we have Onan Cummins Gensets that are very good... the oldest is circa 1995 with about 400 hours on the clock... the BAAQMD has given us notice of forced retirement because the Diesel doesn't meet specifications that came about AFTER it was manufactured...

They put my friends out of business... a mom and pop excavation company with like new, bought new Backhoe and Dump truck... he was given a compliance date to repower or replace... at 62 he decided to throw in the towel...

It should be criminal to impose after the fact laws on innocents... and this is just what the BAAQMD does... they put people out of business or use the threat of it to force spending thousands of dollars...

I really feel very strongly about this and have attended hearings in Sacramento on my own time and it always turns out the same... the die is cast and the politicians and staff are just going through the motions.

The ironic part is Government Agencies are exempt...

I would never bash... drive by the plant all the time and a lot of my friends worked there... both when it was GM and later as NUMMI.

Tesla is merging with Solar City if I heard correctly...

It would be easier to validate what some have said about California if there was a glut of vacant properties... the opposite seems to be true... at least for the SF Bay Area.

Don't get me wrong... it was hard to come back from Olympia last month... but then July and August are wonderful months to be in the Pacific Northwest!

And when every reason to live there drys up, in the end it's nice weather. Ok... HS

You know that there is an old saying "If you're not the lead dog, the view never changes". How's the view back there?:laughing::laughing:

Yes........and that is probably a good thing!

Well, TBN IS a TRACTOR website, so that's not too surprising! :tractor:

Fair enough. What I was trying to get at is, TBN folk are very thoughtful, and above all empirical, on matters to do with tractors, even the minor questions. The same thoughtfulness and empirical grounding is generally thrown out the window when talk turns to economic questions, even the largest.

It almost sounds like people are rooting for a California collapse of epic proportions?

....

That's because a lot of people don't like California. Plain and simple. Why? All kinds of reasons. But one main one is they have a disproportional affect on the rest of the country, or at least it is perceived as such.
