Most of those who built California left long ago. HS
BS.

My ancestors were all here before there was a Transcontinental Railroad, ie arrived by 4 month wagon train or one branch walked across the Isthmus of Panama to connect on this side. Another branch via Oregon Trail while California was still Mexico.

They homesteaded, worked in the Gold Rush, lumber, etc. Next generation and subsequent figured out the real profits were in selling newcomers stuff they needed. Land mostly, lumber, hardware, newspapers, education.

Not a single one has left.

I think you're talking about the kind of people who are dissatisfied wherever they go. We see a lot of them come, go, badmouth that which they never understood.

Not a single has left, good stay there! Please stay there... My family arrived from Switzerland on August 29, 1739, on the good ship Samuel, into Philadelphia, after barging down the Rhine to Rotterdam. We all have a story. This man a non-immigrant, here prior to becoming a nation, here at founding. HS

True... which is how it is in my city too.

I need a permit to remove a tree except for Eucalyptus... the permit fee is refunded for dead trees.

Up here....we call that logging.......I just dropped 5 alder and 4 doug fur last week.....no permit required. Glad I no longer live in Calif.

I needed to take out a hazardous Walnut tree behind a duplex... it dropped a large branch in a windstorm catching the roof gutter.

In order to remove the tree I had to pay for a permit... think it was $40 at the time and the city sent all my neighbors a copy of my application and placarded the neighborhood as to the period for open comment... plus a visit from the city aborist...

When I mentioned the high cost I was told the single application fee could cover as many as 5 trees...

It took several weeks to get the go ahead.

In Washington I had several large firs taken out... it was less in cost than the single Walnut.

Here is the current application and it is now $68

Interesting. Is this your family?

No, I'm not stalking you! As a kid, I lived in Germany and took several day cruises on the Rhine. I never really thought about it going into Switzerland and also terminating in Rotterdam. So I Googled it and saw that link and this map.

You still might want to move back here to the great PNW. I hear you on the property taxes though. Gorgeous this week!!! I'm burning the rest of my clearing done two years ago. Free burn permit good for a year, but I imagine a Kitsap county burn ban will be in place by the weekend so I'm working hard. The window between your brush and stumps being dry enough and the surroundings not too dry to risk it.

I might be making a quick trip up next week... all depends on how the showings go.

$1000 a month property tax is the tough nut to crack.

Being on well water, septic and having the option of wood heat means not having a lot of the typical costs...

In California the water bill is about $70 per month BEFORE a drop of water flows...

The big saving grace is Prop 13 which treats every transaction independently... matters not if someone were to buy the home next to me for a million dollars... my taxes are based on what I paid for my home... not what my neighbor paid for theirs.

There have been a lot of changes since I bought in Thurston County... wetland setbacks and land use... my neighbor has a meadow that looks very pastoral... never would imagine that my land use has changed dramatically because my neighbor has a meadow...

What is the issue that politicians will never address. HS

Getting rid of the bloated staff numbers that exist in every department and cutting wasteful spending.

You believe what you want to believe.......from a health perspective they all suck......here's some fun facts.....

Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of disease, disability, and death in the United States. Each year, an estimated 443,000 people die prematurely from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, and another 8.6 million live with a serious illness caused by smoking.

Drinking too much can harm your health. Excessive alcohol use led to approximately 88,000 deaths and 2.5 million years of potential life lost (YPLL) each year in the United States from 2006 – 2010, shortening the lives of those who died by an average of 30 years. Further, excessive drinking was responsible for 1 in 10 deaths among working-age adults aged 20-64 years. The economic costs of excessive alcohol consumption in 2010 were estimated at $249 billion, or $2.05 a drink.3

Exactly. Besides it's nobody else's business what you do to yourself. Instead of mining my business or yours and no one is stepping on anyone's toes, I want the government to do what they are supposed to do. How about protecting our borders, insuring some domestic tranquility, establish some actual justice, provide for the common defence and securing some liberty for a friggin change.

Yeah, if I had my way I'd shut down an entire bowl of alphabet soup over night and the DEA and ATF would be among the first to go but certainly not the last. For a change a lot of gubberment types would get a taste of how unemployment feels. Go get a real job and do something useful for a change.

Well said......

Q: How many Californians does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A: Five - one to screw it in and four to sit in the hot tub and discuss the environmental impact.

In all seriousness, I've been to CA 4 times. All were in southern CA from late 70's to mid 2000's. I enjoyed the ocean. I enjoyed the mountains. I enjoyed the giant Sequoias. I know I saw a limited amount of the place, but my overall impression was that each time I went there it was more of a hellhole than the last time. And I know that's because I was pretty much concentrated within a 100 mile radius of LA most of the time. But even out in the area between LA, Bakersfield and the Sequoias, even the farms and ag operations depressed me. I get the same feeling in Chicago. But even in Chicago, I can drive an hour and be away from it. I gotta get to northern CA some time. Maybe fly into SF and drive north to Canada?

Several options... SF, San Jose, Oakland and head North...

Many like to head South along the coast hitting Big Sur and the towns along the way...

I really like Western Washington and Victoria/Vancouver Canada...
