So found a BX25 listed for sale. Talked to the owner. Second owner and he said he bought it after first owner rolled it. Has used it about 15 to 20 hours as is. Says it puts out white smoke for the first couple minutes after starting and then the smoke stops and it runs fine after that with normal power. Also has the HST fan blades broken off which he said he did recently by driving through brush and admitted upfront. I am familiar with the HST fan blades and repairing that.

Having read through many forum threads seems the roll overs on these often result in oil in pistons causing the rods to bend if started right away after a roll over without draining oil first. Does the symptom of white smoke for a couple minutes after startup reflect that kind of damage? If it has been used 15 to 20 hours after the damage was done will that make it worse or would the damage stay constant? What kind of price range might the engine repair cost if repaired? Low / high?

He is asking about $9000 for it with around 350 hours on it. Trying to decide if it is worth driving to see it or best to simply pass. A BX25 in this area with those hours in good condition normally sells for about $14k.

Thanks in advance!

What Engine is in that?

I have seen low hours D722 Smoke like that at startup for a couple of minutes before warming up. Rough runnning little engines if you ask me.

BX25 use a D902 engine in them. Thanks!

Nicer Engine if you ask me. I think I have that in a generator. It starts nice but also makes a little smoke, yes almost steam for a minute or so.

My father has a 600 or 700 hour BX23 that has a little puff of smoke at start up and always has...Thing still runs like a champ. By BX 22 was the same and I bought it new.

First couple of minutes of smoke is not normal. Maybe call up a Kubota service department and ask what they think (mention roll over). Price is very attractive though. My BX25D puffs for second or two then I can't see exhaust. I have about 400hrs on mine.

To answer your question, yes an engine can be damaged by oil in the combustion chamber and started. And with a varying result. Some are just fine, some completely lock-up and everything in between.

My JD 770 was rolled by either my uncle or father (both blame each other). It was rolled back on its wheels, and maybe left to sit for a while. Nobody told me. The "roller" was fine so they fired it back up and drove it away at some point. Neither of them admit to it so I can't get any details from them. Other than the huge clod of grass and dirt in the corner of the canopy, there was no outward damage. But it starts now with a cloud of white smoke. Starts just as good as ever, smoke clears up, and runs as good as ever. Puffs a little blue when worked hard. I'm sure there is some damage to the 770. Slightly bent rods, broken rings etc. But it runs and I'm guessing I'll never need to open that engine up.

I'm thinking that BX has similar damage. Probably was rolled right side up and left overnight or something. Better than starting immediately, but the right thing would have been to open up the glow plugs and crank the engine to get any fluids out.

Price is not bad, but like dragoneggs said, give the dealer a call. There is a chance that engine could run for thousands of hours without a rebuild. But its more likely that it could get worse.
