Much of these charts and theorums are well over my head.
I VERY MUCH appreciate the input, Please understand that and I THANK YOU
for posting up it all...DON'T STOP! :)

It's mostly common sense but when charts get more than one line on them I know it can be easy for your eyes to glaze over. I'll make up a document this weekend to provide some examples.

So as I said I am going to have Greg Sexton of Sexton welding, Ontario CA weld up my cage
even though I own 3 Millers. Greg is second to none, a skilled welder he is. I asked
him to stop by and look at the whole deal and he did. When we carried my stuff
to his truck I saw a big pile of large SS parts in his truck, he told me they basically
were blade holders for Carcus cutting machines by Kent Master, right here in my town.

His work is just off the chain nice...here is a picture
of parts headed to Kentmaster... All those large parts are huge
SS chunks! I left the pics large format. I do not know what parts those are
but I will try to ID them at KentMaster.

Looks like #203 Beef Splitting Saw frames .
I went thru all the links, looking at all the tools, most notable was the "Brain Vacuum" and the "Skull Splitter" LOL! :cow:

I read through their whole catalog. Fascinating!

You also got me watching slaughterhouse videos on youtube for about 20 minutes!

Swick ok I think I see your point on tabs and slots and the possibilitys
of crack eminating from said...I kinda get it now, I think. ButSomeHowever,
the off road boys whom endure MASSIVE impacts over and over use
the tab and slot methods in suspension parts...makes me wonder.

I agree with overbuilding any design will work. See my grapple for example :)

those guys are having the same argument about tab or no tab, filleted tab corners, tab location, tab size, and tab spacing. I guess you can argue anything on the internet but tabs are not good design practice on structural parts. Like I said your part is slightly overbuilt so you will be fine. Have fun with it and don't worry!

I noticed that Beef Splitting Saw weighs 200 pounds. I guess you'd need a pretty "beefy" guy to run that thing all day.

I SO APPRECIATE the input. Thank YOU!

Yep were starting to have fun w/ it, the hard part(s) of
the project are, I believe, done. Now I can do some magic once
I get my fixed points in and attached...

The Port, Starboard and Rear Anchors should be done first of the week.
Then I will be able to really get to the gettin' regarding the tubular work.

Here is me executing bend #1 w/ my JD2 Hydraulicly powered tubing bender.
It is not a pro video at all, accept my appoligizes before you watch it!
I will try to do a better video on into this. :filmstrip:

You can see some of that stuff on YOU TUBE, they incorporate
counter balancing weights whichs make them almost weightless
to use...

Yep, I noticed some kind of attaching point on the top for a suspension cable.

My welder is off the chain awesome. Greg has been doing this for 40 years, he needs no more practice.
I showed up and he was not done and he laid down beads while talking to me as I don'd one of his helmets
and watched...didn't miss a beat, just lays down BEAUTIFUL beads over and over. "You see that Artisan,
that is called Certified welding, I am getting a good 50% penetration and because I am doing both sides
that is about right.
" GAWD I wish I could weld like that...

The proof is in the puddin';

In picture 3rd from top, I watched him weld that, he didn't stop! He TIGg'd
from horizontal to vertical going down to horizontal then did a 180 and went horizontal
to vertical UP to horizontal w/o stopping! HA!

In the pic 2nd from bottom, understand he did all that IN THAT HOLE! :blacksmith:

SWEET! I'm glad he plugged up those tabs!

When you cut a squared slot in the steel - you have created a potential point where a crack can start at each corner of the square. If the hold was rounded - you would likely not have the same POTENTIAL problem.

Welding the tabbed pieces COMPLETELY together potentially eliminates the problem because the metal is all melted together in the area of the tab - therefore eliminating the "corners". But now you have had to melt a relatively large area of the steel to eliminate those corners and you have introduced another potential failure point - the weld area itself.

In reality if you just overbuild the crap out of it you will likely never see any problems - it's only when you overengineer a part and make it "just enough" and / or under stress all the time that you stand a likelihood of seeing a failure.

Good to see some other fungineers in here!

The best definition of engineering I've heard is "doing with one dollar what any fool can do with two dollars"

Luckily we're all rich enough to afford the extra material.
