BX23 Temperature gauge - what\'s a normal range?

I've only had my BX 23 for a month or so, and I've not seen the temperature gauge go more than a 1/4 to 1/2" from the lowest setting. Is this normal? Other than two mowings in late October, the rest of the 20 hours or so have been with FEL grading work at 1/2 throttle or so. Thanks!

That's about where mine runs at.

Same here w/ about 100 hours. Mine runs a lil warmer when mowing, but never past 1/2 mark.

Diesel engines run cold, unless they are working hard. Hard is a key word. When they idle, they actually cool down. My gauge runs at about 1/4 when mowing full speed. Idle it for 5 minutes and it drops below that.

Re: BX23 Temperature gauge - what\'s a normal range?

Thanks for all the responses! Once I get past 50 hours, I'm more apt to run at higher throttles, but wanted to keep it under full throttle for now. Glad to know the low temperature is normal.

Re: BX23 Temperature gauge - what\'s a normal range?

My BX-23 (about 270 hours) runs with the temperature needle just touching the left side of the little "crankcase" (or whatever it is) symbol in the middle of the face.

That's for "light duty" such as FEL work, pulling/pushing the box blade, etc. Running flat out with the brush hog on a 90-degree day the needle almost gets to the middle of the scale. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Under those conditions, I always let it run at a fast idle for several minutes to cool down before shutting it off.

Just a bit under half way.

Re: BX23 Temperature gauge - what\'s a normal range?

In winter doing FEL or BH work it registers about 1/4 of the way.

In the heat of the summer running the 60" MMM in the tall stuff and the screen half covered in debris it gets up to 1/2 way to alittle higher.
When it gets this hot it can take upto 3 - 5 minutes at "smooth" idle AND with the screen blown off to cool it down before shutdown.

Re: BX23 Temperature gauge - what\'s a normal range?

In the current cold weather, the temperature doesn't get to more than 1/4 on the gauge, often even less. Is it fair to assume that no cool down period is necessary before shutting down at these temperatures?

Re: BX23 Temperature gauge - what\'s a normal range?

Hmmm. I've got a new L4400 with about 25 hours on it. Even in August pulling a 7' mower in 90 degree heat my temp gauge never goes higher than the first little mark, which is just up about 1/4 _inch_ from the bottom. You can barely tell it has come up at all. Running it in 45 degree weather it does exactly the same even doing heavy FEL work. Wonder if something is wrong? It runs, starts and restarts great.
