I read in the paper last night about some nut who is in the process of driving his brand new Kubota BX2200 all around the country. He hopes to make it into every state and estimates his trip to total 14,000 miles. Sounds to me like an oil change each week! He stated in the article that this was a way for him to celebrate his new Kubota. It would be great to spend that amount of time on a Kubota, but imagine the hours it will have on it. 14,000 miles divided by 9 mph equals 1555 hours and 31 oil changes. Anyone looking for a slightly used BX2200? WOW!!!

RBrown,

Yes, he's a nut, must be retired (not that all retired are nuts) to have the time to do that! Your numbers are just a little off, both BX's have a top speed of 8.1 mph!
So to go 14,000 miles would take him 1728 hours.
Now, if he were on the Might New Holland TC18, more tractor for about the same money, he could go 9.95 mph and make the trip in 1,407 hours! /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif That's 40 less days if driving 8 hrs/day!

BX = 216 days TC = 176 days

Aren't numbers fun! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

JimBinMi - How about re-figuring it with my 19.5LR24's on the back? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

MarkC,

Sorry, the Kubota website does not list a ground speed for your tractor...must go either too fast or too slow to calculate! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

But keep in mind my comparison...dollar for dollar, more tractor and more capability for about the same money, I think your tractor with all of your adaptations costs slightly more than these! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

And I though 20 mph was SLOW!!! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Wen,

Is that all that your 68 hp will go? Let me see, more than triple the hp but only double the speed! The TC18 truly reigns here! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Make sure you go vote for the TC18 today! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

The guy evidently has never been from Amarillo,TX to Winslow, AZ on I-40. After the first 10 miles the scenery doesn't change much for the next 1000 miles. I can't imagine driving 9 miles/hour across there.

And I sure wouldn't want to make that trip without an air-conditioned cab, either, unless I could go fast enough to stir up a good breeze./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Somehow after spending 5 years in Lubbock at Texas Tech, the song Lubbock Texas in my rear view mirror brings back memories. Lots of cotton and lots of dust.

Of course since the TC 18 uses a Shiburahaha diesel with more displacement to develop its measely little HP then the BX2200, smokes, is noisier, has a slow torque rise, HST that pales in comparison to the far superior one made by Kubota, my money is on the BX2200. I'll never buy another (removed)/NewHolland tractor, Boomie or not, they don't make tractors nearly as well as the far superior Kubotas. Blue will make you BLUE. Ex Ford/Old Holland tractor owner

Yeah slow poke, geez, my tractor has 105 HP and does 23 mph downhill with the engine off and 20 with the engine on up or down hill. This other feller, he must be joking right, 18 horsepower is not a real tractor, its a garden tractor. Sounds like a wannabe tractor, bet its a cute lil feller, probably even gave it a name, bet it even gets made love too,oh well, not one to wanna ruffle up the feathers, well maybe just a little, this tractor site is pretty fun. Sure must be a lot of them Kubotas, must be real popular becasue so many different people all love talking about them. Thinking about gettin one of those lil fellas myself for the misses, maybe 30 or 40 hp at the PTO. Need something that'll do bout 70 mph on the freeway and 4 or 5 mph on the lawn, Hank

Hank,

It's all perspective and experience, right? From my perspective, my 18.5 hp IS a real tractor and from some other people's perspective, your 105 hp is only a toy! /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

At what hp does a garden tractor become a tractor in your world? Just trying to see how many other compact tractor owners you can insult here! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Actually, I think 25 mph is the top legal speed for an unlicensed agricultural tractor, trailer, fertilizer spreader, etc. Most R1 tires are rated accordingly.

Glad the brakes on the Kubota are really good. Slip out of gear and realize that you have 9000# rolling downhill and if it had my old Massey Ferguson brakes and unsync gearbox, I couldn't have gotten it stopped nearly as easily. Fortunately the synchronized gearbox allows you to get it back in gear easily. Love the old tractors, but the new ones sure make you forget all of the shortcomings of the old ones.

Some new tractors are no better than old tractors, either. Guess there is no point in naming them.

I don't think he can even find a route that will get him through to his goal. With a 5 gallon tank, estimate 1 gallon per hour and an average speed of let's say 8 MPH, I don't think that there are diesel pumps every 40 miles in the US. And at the current cost of fuel, he is nuts.

Why is it that every time someone says how much they like their new BX they get beat up on by Ford and that other brand owners. Good grief, I like my BX even more now and I am completely happy with it. If they enjoy their tractors as much as I have mine they are lucky. I think what some people forget is that there are reasons to own small tractors and while it is true they cannot do everything the larger machines can do the reasons for buying a small tractor still remain valid, not tearing up the lawn if mowing is the prime use (for me it is), better manuverability and stability etc. Shucks maybe I will get a big Kubota to go with my BX to keep it company. Now do not anyone get in a huff, just my little opinion, cannot wait for spring. Best to all regardless.

I don't think the term "beat up" is entirely accurate, if you've spent much time on this board you've got to know it's the most civil bunch of people on ANY board for ANYTHING I've found.

Now if ANY of us were to start talking about our tractors (50hp on down) to anyone using the big stuff they' REALLY laugh!

I haven't seen any of the "I've got a Ford, I hate Chevy's" nonsense you sometimes see in real life.

People will just point out why THEY bought THEIR tractors. I can remember sometime last year someone was scoffing at the publicity the BX was receiving among tractorophiles. Compared to a bigger tractor it IS worse, and compared to a smaller tractor it IS better. And in some respects it IS better than a larger one, just depends on the job. I don't think some people understood that the excitement was not over it's abilities compared to a bigger tractor, but it's abilities in it's size class, which was previously limited to the bigger JD garden tractors which were 2WD and no where near the tractor the BX is. Actually I have seen a 4WD tractor smaller and cuter then the BX, it was about a 25 year old Kubota!
I have a BX2200, a Ford 1710 TLB 27 gross HP 5000 lbs, and a Kubota L35 6100 lbs 35 gross hp. Oh, and I also have JD Garden Tractor 800 lbs? It runs rings around the BX in mowing duties but sure has a heck of a time substituting for the L35 getting the stumps out!

While I don't condone this guy putting all those miles on his BX, I do understand it. I put a lot of time into research on buying a tractor, given my needs and cash. First of all, i don't have a need for a large tractor, my primary use will be mowing, but the FEL and 3pt would come in handy if i needed them for the occasonal job. Any larger frame and it would be too big to maneuver in my yard. I almost went with the JD455, but was pretty disappointed with the construction of the FEL, and the lack of 4wd, and the cost was very near that of the BX. If i opted not to get a FEL, i probably would have gone with the Cub 3140, but even that approaches the cost of the BX when you add a snow blade and 60" deck. My biggest worry is that I won't have enough work for the FEL and box rake to justify it. All in all, if the machine fits your needs and you are happy with it, then it's the one for you. Enjoy it and dont' look back.

All that said, GO ORANGE!!!

CB; Don't worry that you will not have enough work to justify the FEL and box rake. I had the same concern (with regard to the FEL), but purchased it anyway (just had to have it). It is amazing what jobs you will find. One year ago, I thought that I would never have a need for a box blade myself; now this Spring I will be looking for one myself.

Corollary to "Build it and they will come"….. "Buy it, and you will find uses for it".
