My wife was mowing the lawn the other night with her new BX1860 and all of a sudden it died. No sputter, just shut down. Restarted OK. Then when she parked it it did not want to shut off. I had to move the solenoid linkage to shut it down.

Solenoid or ignition switch? The guages are also not reading properly, dropped to zero.

help anyone?

Sounds like a Fuse

I will check the fuses, thanks.

I won't be able to check it tonight, but does the shut off solenoid have a fuse? Any one have a schematic for the BX 1860?

Thanks all.

Checked the solenoid fuse, it is good. Started the tractor, put a meter on the solenoid connection, shut off the key, no power to the solenoid wire. My guess is the ignition switch is bad and not transferring power to the shut down solenoid.

Sometimes the shut off solenoids get "sticky" inside. Reconnect the solenoid or jumper to twelve volts and test it. If I remember right they pull in when powered and release when the power is cut. You will have to pull lightly when shut off.

If you have not, check all the fuses, there is more than one circuit involved in the keystop system.

which fuse did you check? one by battery? or one by alternator?

I would follow the wire from solenoid and make sure its tight. wont hurt to pull out and reconnect that white connector. Keep following that wire to other side of engine and there is a fuse holder taped to loom by alternator. check that. keep following same wire harness to the ground and make sure ground wire is not loose/broken to the frame rail.

I checked the fuse in the fuse block. I checked the white connector at the solenoid. I will check the fuse by the alternator, I assume you are talking about the large fuse there. I didn't know it could be in the loop for the solenoid.

Thanks guys.

My 6 year old BX1500 just began intermittently not shutting off with the key. According to the troubleshooting section of my shop manual, probable causes are:
-20a fuse blown
-wiring harness disconnected or poor connection between main switch AC terminal and engine stop solenoid
-engine stop solenoid defective
-timer relay defective
When the engine would not shut off I found that lifting the seat up while in gear or while PTO was engaged also did not shut off the engine, and since all these components (seat switches, neutral switch, solenoid, timer relay, main switch) are interconnected I cleaned all their connectors, sprayed them with contact cleaner and reconnected. This solved the problem. It also solved an odd starting problem that I will post about separately since it seems unrelated to the problem discussed here.

Timer relay fuse was the culprit.
